Chris Dodd's Irish 'Cottage'
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 12, 2009 | Editorial

Posted on 03/12/2009 2:56:47 AM PDT by Scanian

The Senate Ethics Committee has been looking into possible conflicts of interest in Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd's 2003 mortgages. Now questions about another Dodd real-estate adventure, this one in Ireland, should keep the Ethicists even busier. All the more because Mr. Dodd's "cottage" purchase involves a crooked stock trader for whom the Senator once did a very big political favor.

Mr. Dodd is already under a cloud for receiving what a former loan officer claims was preferential treatment from Countrywide Financial on two mortgage refinancings -- in Connecticut and Washington -- in 2003. Countrywide was an aggressive lender to shaky borrowers and relied heavily on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy those mortgages in bulk. As a senior Member of the Senate Banking Committee, Mr. Dodd was one of Fannie's greatest promoters. Mr. Dodd promised last year to disclose mortgage documents to prove he got no special treatment, but so far all he's done is let a few hand-picked journalists take a quick peek before he put the papers back in storage.

Now enterprising Hartford Courant columnist Kevin Rennie has uncovered another suspicious real-estate investment. The story starts in 1994, when the Senator became one-third owner of a 10-acre estate, then valued at $160,000, on the island of Inishnee on Galway Bay.

I'm glad stuff like this is coming out about Dodd, who's a crooked as they come.

But I very much doubt that it's coming out because "enterprising columnist Kevin Rennie" uncovered anything. It's much more likely that someone who has the goods on Dodd decided to drop a dime on him and called Rennie first.

It’s amazing how Dodd and Fwank have been hidden from view! Where are the Congressional hearings for those two crooks?!

My wife was a Dallas fan 25 or 30 years ago, and I remember episodes having to do with a crooked congressman wheedling for an Irish cottage payoff from JR. Life imitates art once again.

You mean EX-Congressman William Jefferson of LA? He is still under indictment for corruption, I believe, unless there are some recent developments in the case. Republican Anh Cao beat Jefferson in the 2008 election.

Yes she did.
A Republican won the district in the 1st time forever.
Jefferson should be in jail awaiting trial but alas as a congress critter he could have killed someone and gotten off, just like Kennedy.

“We need to kick everyone out of congress and start over.”

No truer words have been spoken. If this rat wins reelection it will only confirm my suspicions that we, as a country, are in a death spiral due to a mass incompetence of the electorate.

“I’m glad stuff like this is coming out about Dodd, who’s a crooked as they come.”

Which only means he will be appointed by Bambi to head up Freddie or Fannie when he loses reelection.

At least Tom Dodd was anti-communist. Chris has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
