Steele: Abortion an 'individual choice' (interview a must-read)
Politico ^ | March 11, 2009 | Ben Smith; interview by Lisa Paulo

Posted on 03/11/2009 9:02:19 PM PDT by xjcsa

In an interview with GQ, Michael Steele called abortion an "individual choice" and said the question should be left to the states.

Quotes from the interview; interviewer's questions in italics:

THE GOOD:

Do you think bipartisanship can work?

No. [pause] Look, I’m sorry, I know this is, you know, la-la land and Rodney King time and we all wanna get along, but that is not the nature of American politics. That is not the nature of politics, period.

I don’t know if refreshing’s the word, but to hear someone say bipartisanship doesn’t work—

It doesn’t work! I mean, I understand the ideal of it. But at the end of the day, this is a game of winners and losers. This is zero-sum. Your winning is my losing. My winning is your losing.

[snip]

THE BAD

Do you think homosexuality is a choice?

Oh, no. I don’t think I’ve ever really subscribed to that view, that you can turn it on and off like a water tap. Um, you know, I think that there’s a whole lot that goes into the makeup of an individual that, uh, you just can’t simply say, oh, like, “Tomorrow morning I’m gonna stop being gay.” It’s like saying, “Tomorrow morning I’m gonna stop being black.”

[snip]

THE UGLY

Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion? Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice.

You do?

Yeah. Absolutely.

Are you saying you don’t want to overturn Roe v. Wade?

I think Roe v. Wade—as a legal matter, Roe v. Wade was a wrongly decided matter.

Okay, but if you overturn Roe v. Wade, how do women have the choice you just said they should have?

The states should make that choice. That’s what the choice is. The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide.

That is absolutely not true EV...you take a zero tolerance stance on this issue and it polarizes the whole country. It is no different than Obama supporting infanticide. You think you are on the side of RIGHT and you want to impose your belief and view on the entire population. It is no different than the leftist and their agenda.

The entire point is not to allow the federal government to decide which is right for the entire country. The states should decide and it should reflect the wishes of the local population and you should live in a state that supports your view.

You are missing the entire point...you are focused on your belief regarding abortion and completely misunderstanding that the entire issue is around whether the Federal government should be allowed to impose it’s views (which are driven by people like Pelosi) on everyone else.

Keep pushing this ideological difference as hard as you want but you are losing the war and what good has it done to lose the war and millions upon millions of innocent children are slaughtered every year in this country.

We have to beat them at their own game but first we must make a balanced argument to remove these decisions from the Federal government and back to the states. Until these issues are decided at the stated level we will all be subject to the corruption within our Federal government.

It is ironic that you will take an issue like abortion and basically attack people on the same side as you all for the purpose that you are limited in your vision to see what has to be done to win this war.

I would suggest it is far better to have 3 states that would outlaw abortion than to have an entire country forced to support abortions along with the closing of 25% of the Christian hospital beds in this country.

We have to come together on a set of guiding principles that is what will get us to where we need to be. But as long as you focus on a polarizing issue we will never be able to gather momentum to make serious change in this country and at the end of the day you will have LOST completely and abortion will reign supreme...all because you think you are right and you think everyone else should have to agree with your position.

We need to be smart about when, where and who we pick are battles with. Until abortion is brought back to a state level decision we will never make progress on this.

If you think that if you had a daughter that was raped and impregnated and you don’t think you should be able to abort the abomination then either you don’t have a daughter or you are way to focused on the issue to understand that either side of the extreme on this issue is a non-starter.

The states should decide

What other unalienable rights do you want "the states to decide"?

As far as I am concerned the states should decide everything. There is no trust or faith left in our federal government. We should do everything we can to contain the corruption and work to eliminate the perps.

abort the abomination

It's not "an abomination." It's a completely innocent child.

You're functionally no different than Barack Obama, as far as particular individual children are concerned.

You're not God, with the right to decide who is worthy of life and who isn't.

This sort of power is way above your paygrade.

Then you believe in the destruction of the United States of America, whether you realize it or not.

Wouldn’t it be better to know what states to avoid?...lol.

Wouldn’t you rather live in a neighborhood and state that supports your positions?

Wouldn’t you rather your children go to schools where they will get a fair and balanced education?

Only the states can make that happen and if in the end that means we all live in Texas...then so be it...I wouldn’t even care if Chuck Norris were President of Texas it sure would beat the Rodney King approach to the world we are getting now.

Wait until Obama/Clinton are finished with putting the US under UN control...it is going to get unbelievable...imagine a corrupt organization like the UN deciding our futures.

The level of corruption is so widespread and out of control that our existence as a nation is going to be limited to a few years now...the end game is coming and these people are leading us to the slaughter.

I suggest you think about the big picture and work to find a way that allows you to be effective and that will only happen at the state level.

Whether you realize it or not..that is EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW.

The US is done. The people of this country have finally voted in the people to actually facilitate it’s demise.

Coupled with the UN they are going to destroy our great nation.

Where will you go once this has happened?

At least by pushing the issue to the states we stand a chance of building a future that is aligned with our beliefs.

I suggest you think about the big picture

I suggest you think about the premises, the foundations, of liberty and why it is being destroyed.

You're part of the erosion that's taking out those foundations.

God have mercy on our children when your views have found their full expression, which could be very soon the way we're going. The whole edifice we know as America will come down in a flash at that moment in time, just like the Trade Center Towers, and it will be too late for anyone to stop it.

If you don't believe that ALL men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with the unalienable right to life, you don't believe in anything worth talking about. You don't believe in liberty.

As a legal issue, Steele is on solid ground.

At what point? He said several conflicting, contradictory things, some of which may have been on solid legal ground, some of which may have been on solid moral ground, and some of which were just plain stupid.

You are a fool if you think you are going to affect change with the corrupt people that are already in power.

The foundation was eroded long ago with the complacency and tolerance of the RINO’s. They alone have allowed this scourge to grow into power.

Republicans had their chance with Bush and by 2006 they completely blew it with their corrupt practices and doomed our country.

Unless you think a full civil war in this country is a good idea (you might want to look at the death toll for the civil war...still greater than all American deaths in every war we have been involved in combined) the only way to affect change now is to reduce the Federal government’s ability to legislate bad policy into laws.

We need the states to step up and start demanding their sovereignty. We need to remove liberal judges from their posts. We need to stop allowing the judicial department to decide which laws they should enforce. We need to create schooling alternatives so your children don’t have to go to public school, you need to convince your college aged kids to make good selections in course and school.

These are the things that are going to save us...not some polarizing viewpoint about eliminating abortion in this country. You want to extrapolate everything from the abortion issue...meanwhile you hold on to this sacred cow while your world is crumbling around you - ALL FROM CORRUPTION.

Go review your history it is corruption that has caused all major nations/empires to completely fail. Go look at what happens to countries when they fail.

Do you even have children?

Indeed. But no state has "sovereignty" over innocent human life. Only God does. That is this free republic's first premise.

You obviously don't even know the disease, so your prescriptions are fatal.

The hopefully god will save our country. Good luck with that one.

You will never get 100% of the country to accept your position. It is a non-starter. Albeit your position is on the moral high ground you will lose the war and ultimately you will have NO affect on stopping abortions.

Because of your limited perspective on the issue you are probably contributing to more abortions than stopping them.

A complete ban on abortions in this country will NEVER happen. There are too many godless people in our country.

What other unalienable rights do you want the states to "decide"?

Religious liberty? Free speech? Free association? The right to peaceably assemble? The right to petition government for redress of grievances? The Right to Keep and Bear Arms? Trial by jury? Due process? Parental rights?

Have you even read the founding documents? Why don't you seem to know anything about what America is, and what the foundations of liberty are? Why don't you seem to care?

Are you kidding me...I was one of the very first people to be part of Free Republic...lol.

You are no different than the Obama hit squads when someone doesn’t agree with your specific position.

This country is a center right country and it will only work as a center right country so get over it...abortion will unfortunately be part of our existence.

I care but I know it can’t be changed and it were changed then we would be no different than a fascist type of government.

God will ultimately judge those who make the mistake to support abortion.

I answered your question. I said as far as I am concerned the states could decide everything at this point.

You don’t seem to understand that the level of corruption makes it impossible for us to get anything done that is moral or ethical at this point.

There is NO ONE that isn’t compromised now.

With that reality we have to have a strategy that allows us to win the war and then re-assemble our unalienable rights.

It’s funny how you don’t realize that your unalienable rights are ALL ready under fire by the Federal government and if you think people like Pelosi, Frank, Dodd, Schumer, Waters, Coyners, etc...are going to listen to anything rational that is outside their leftist agenda your just in dream land.
