WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate has voted to skip a pay raise for members of Congress next year, conscious of the deepening recession and 12 million of their constituents out of work.
But lawmakers will keep their annual automatic pay raises after that.
A huge spending bill that the Senate passed Tuesday contained a provision denying lawmakers their yearly pay raise next January.
Earlier Tuesday, the Senate rejected an amendment by Louisiana Republican David Vitter that would have forced members of Congress who want to boost their own salaries to stand up and be counted.
Congress' most recent pay raise of $4,700 came in January.

How magnaminous of them.
Excuse me, but the number of unemployed workers should be upgraded from 12 million to 12 million--- plus 100.
Perfect.
How about cutting their bloated staffs. Does anyone have comparison numbers between Congressional staffs in say, 1960 and now? I saw these stats once, and the difference is hugh!
Actually, they ought to take a cut—a *big* cut in pay. They don’t do a thing to earn their pay, but they do plenty to earn a pay cut.
Yeah, sure. Their promises are cheap. Return this years raise if you are serious.
The Senate voted against all amendments, because Princess Pelosi decreed that if this bill was amended in any way she would have considered the bill to be dead and we couldn't have had that happen.
Some jerkwad lawyer will sue and force them to take the raise whan no one is looking...
It was passed on a voice vote after cloture was invoked. 8 Republicans voted to cut off debate...don’t know who they are.
Curious how much would be saved flying coach.
Indeed. Now if The 100 returned the money they received from Fannie & Freddie (just for starters) it would be a bit more impressive, but I ain't holding my breath.
all 535 should cut 2 staffers at a minimum. That could save a bit. I know they will whimper and cry about it though.
I say we halve their retirement funds like their insane economic policies have done to the private sector.
I’m with you. The bastards get sweetheart fixed pensions with COLAs regardless of how the market does.
Four legs good, two legs bad.
Cool. Index their TOTAL (and I do mean total) compensation package to how their dumb@$$ policies impact the wealth-producing private sector.
They WILL get their raise and not one Senator will have to vote on it directly.
“535 should cut 2 staffers at a minimum. That could save a bit.”
Actually, that would do a great deal by virtue of the fact that such a proposition would potentially limit the amount of damage that they could do to the country and it’s taxpayers (suckers).
they should take a 50% cut and give us back our tax $$$’s
