My Beef With Ann Coulter
Daily Beast ^ | Megan McCain

Posted on 03/09/2009 11:41:50 AM PDT by pissant

It is no secret that being a Republican isn’t the most hip political stance a person can take right now. President Obama has successfully established himself as the hippest politician around. You know you’re big when Katy Perry wears a dress with your face on it to host the MTV Europe Music Awards. To my fellow Republicans: I’m sorry, I wish I could be more positive about the current “hipness” of our party. But being a Republican is about as edgy as Donny Osmond. Granted, being “hip” is not a reason to join a political party, or a reason to agree with its ideals. But it is a way to get the attention of a generation—or, more specifically, my generation.

To make matters worse, certain individuals continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about Republicans. Especially Republican women. Who do I feel is the biggest culprit? Ann Coulter. I straight up don’t understand this woman or her popularity. I find her offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time. But no matter how much you or I disagree with her, the cult that follows Coulter cannot be denied. She is a New York Times best-selling author and one of the most notable female members of the Republican Party. She was one of the headliners at the recent CPAC conference (but when your competition is a teenager who has a dream about the Republican Party and Stephen Baldwin, it’s not really saying that much).

I just use butter tubs and things like that.

Conservatives are conservationists by nature. We were born ready for this economy. I was raised as I am certain your husband was raised; we were taught it is a sin to waste. I am happy to be in the company of folks like your husband and yourself.

No kidding! As “natural” eaters as some of my friends are, how on earth would they function without all this imported Trader Joes stuff?

Wow, the primaries are over....long ago. Unfortunately the Republican base gave McCain a win. Conservatives lost.

Wow, the primaries are over....long ago. Unfortunately the Republican base open primary system gave McCain a win. Conservatives lost.

There. Fixed it.

Anyone with the power of discernment could see which candidate would be an appropriate President of the US.

Anyone with the power of discernment could see which that neither candidate would be an appropriate President of the US.

Fixed it. Again.

Yes, we would all like to “fix” the facts to fit our own desires, but reality does bite.

McCain unfortunately won the Republican primary, such as it was.

Then he ran against the Democrat Primary winner, such as it was.

And since we are all adults, who have taken our big girls/boys pills, we had to make a choice between the two.....an American, and a anti-American.

No contest.

Poor Meghan appears to inherit that trait of her father’s that also causes him to lash out at fellow republicans - the desire to be liked by the pretty people.

Dear Meghan:

The pretty “hip” people are shallow, materialistic, immature, and stupid.
Get over them already.

And yes, since elections are contests between two peole...

Elections are not contests.

Elections represent the right of the lawful citizen, as a constituent of the electorate, to cast his (or her) vote for the individual whom he or she believes is best suited for the position, or in approval of or denial of any legislative proposition.

If you believe that it's just a contest between two people, then you have surrendered your right to choose your elected representatives, and to approve certain legislative propositions.

In short, you voted for someone who has spent a substantial portion of his career undermining Conservative principles.

Mountainbunny is right on this one.

You must remember that conservatism is not exclusively and wholly contained within the bounds of the Republican Party. Not all conservatives are Republicans, and not all Republicans are conservatives.

The 2008 elections constituted a political inflection point in the conservative movement's relationship with the Republican Party, long its standard bearer. The ordinary conservative could cower in fear by not voting at all or could elect to actually vote, but in doing so, faced a terrible choice: the pragmatic option, or the privileging of a certain faction, namely, the Republican Party, and thus, political power, over one's own beliefs; or the principled option, by voting for the most conservative candidate on the ballot or exercising the right to cast a write-in vote.

What you (and it seems, many Freepers, in addition) opted for was a sacrifice of principle for political power. To that end, you openly displayed that you are for governing, for the sake of governing, rather than governing towards an end. And, in that manner, you are no better than the opportunistic chameleon McCain, who is willing to drift before the winds of "change" and opinion polls, in order to maintain and consolidate his power.

So, either get your act together, and figure out what you stand for, and stand firm, staying strong until the bitter end; or, if you so choose, prepare for the end of the Republican Party.

Just one slight edit. ;-)

I'm afraid she'd have to get over herself, Scotswife. It's what she's been raised to be.

The pretty “hip” people are shallow, materialistic, immature, and stupid.

Her mommy and daddy have made a lifestyle out of it.

I’ve noticed her weight as well. Her mother is so slim so it’s surprising that she’s as heavy as she is for such a young woman. Wait ‘till she has kids..... She’ll really plump up then....
