Sounds like he is becoming Catholic because his wife is.
Not to criticize Newt’s motives but this but this is often a different type of conversion than someone who become Catholic because they believe it is the True Faith based on careful analysis of Theology and the Scriptures.

Many convert after attending Catholic mass with their spouse, friend or relative. My husband is one of those. He attended for 5 years with our family before surprising me with the news that he wanted to find out more about the church by attending RCIA. At the end of the process he felt like he had found his spiritual home. That was 15 years ago and we still attend mass weekly and holy days.
