The United States is not winning the war in Afghanistan and there may be opportunities to reach out to moderates in the Taliban, U.S. President Barack Obama has told the New York Times.
In an interview done Friday and published Sunday, Obama pointed to the success in peeling Iraqi insurgents away from hardliners in al-Qaeda in Iraq. In recent years, U.S. troops persuaded Sunni Muslim insurgents there to co-operate in some instances because they had been alienated by the tactics of al-Qaeda terrorists.
"There may be some comparable opportunities in Afghanistan and in the Pakistani region," Obama said. "But the situation in Afghanistan is, if anything, more complex."

-- President Gover ClevelandOur President wants to "reach out" to the bastards who helped Osama bin Laden launch the attacks that killed thousands of Americans. Obama is crap, rotten crap, period.
Benteen, come quick! PS - Bring teleprompter. Bring telepromter.
“Obama considers reaching out to moderates in Taliban:”
All I cab say is that he’ll grab a hand full of air if
he’s looking for moderates in that pack of dog’s.
A moderate Taliban is one who only beats women half to death.
he’s only wanting to connect with his Muslim roots don’tcha know...
More likely the leader of the free world will be appeasing some mid level Taliban warlords. That’s how you project strength in the Middle East according to Comrade President Obama.
Iraq, that simple straightforward engagement O speaks of was won by, in the words of Petraeus “Putting AQ on the ropes and beating the crap out of them” Not by talking to militants alone. They were easier to talk to after we showed ourselves to be the stronger tribe.
He may as well. He has some in his inner-circle.
And now, Petraeus’ boss wants to go with his hat in hand to the vile creeps that gave AQ all they needed to strike America on 9/11/01. Obama is a very bad person.
I wish that I felt some certainty that our (alleged) president wanted the United States to prevail.

Petraeus sees value in talking to Taliban
Wed Oct 8, 2008
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus said on Wednesday that negotiations with some members of the Taliban could provide a way to reduce violence in sections of Afghanistan gripped by an intensifying insurgency.
"If there are people who are willing to reconcile (with the government), then that would be a positive step in some of these areas that have actually been spiraling downward," said Petraeus, who will soon take up responsibility for U.S. operations in Afghanistan.
Reaching across the mosque, as it were...
Those effing maggots caused 9/11. We CAN NOT negotiate with them, ever. Good golly miss molly!!! Has America gone insane?
Hey, I got an idea. Why don’t we negotiate with the KKK. Or “reach out” to the neo-nazis. Do these people realize who they are talking about, the TALIBAN?!?!?!?!?
-Reach out to Rush.
-Allow the opposition in either house a chance to examine legislation before casting a vote.
Mein Fuhrer, I kann valk!!
Someone please tell me what a moderate Taliban is? Is it sort of like a moderate Nazi, or a moderate AQ or moderate terrorist? /s
That reminds me of something I just read: There is a pastor in Baltimore who is upset with Obama because O invited and then disinvited the Baltimore Mayor from the National Mayors conference. This African American pastor put out a youtube video to Obama and said ‘Sir,if you can sit down and speak with enemies of our country, then are you doing this to our Mayor? We are waiting for an answer from you”
(The Mayor of Baltimore has corruption charges against her, not sure when the trial is set for).
The terrorists have been wary ever since George Bush invaded Iraq. The very idea of negotiating with the Taliban will serve as the signal to begin terrorist actions anew.
I wish that p.o.s. Dumbo would consider “reaching out” to capitalists here at home.
That is absolutely correct. The jihadists can smell weakness from across the ocean and they never fail to take advantage. Ever.
