I feel so strongly about this - I believe in being prepared for emergency, esp for disruption in food/water/electric/medical supply. I don’t just mean a weeks worth, but at least 3 month’s worth.

Before you call me an alarmist, here is how I look at it. You know how you hear people say how they could never forgive themselves if someone broke into their homes and they couldn’t defend their families? Well, I feel the same way, and I would feel just as badly having to look into my children’s eyes and tell them I have no food. Especially when everyone could see at the beginning of 2008 there was trouble coming down the pike.

I am a believer, and my friends say this is a lack of faith. I say look at Joseph. Noah. God isn’t against being “prepped” for disaster.

Off the soap box now ;)

I’m spending about $200 a month for as long as I can on supplies. I’m getting about a month’s worth of food (for 4 people) and some medical supplies out of that. Here’s my shopping list:

Ingredients for “Plumpynut”
- large can of peanut butter
- powdered sugar
- powdered milk (large can)
- 180 ct. multi-vitamin
- gallon veg oil
8 large cans diced tomatoes
15 lbs assorted dry beans
4 large cans tuna or salmon
2 containers of grits
4 cans chicken
gateraid
coffee
tea
v-8

every month I’m buying different spices and seasonings (to make life more bearable)

I’m also getting:
vinegar
baking soda
dog food (cheap stuff)
cat food (cheap stuff)
bleach
coffee filters
lighters
alcohol
peroxide
salt
cheap sheets
toilet paper
aspirin
ibuprophen
toilet paper

OK, it’s not perfect, but it’s cheap and we’d have a nutritionally complete life for awhile. Once we get the garden, chickens and goats up and running, I’ll feel better.

As of right now, I have 3 months worth of provisions and I do feel more secure.

And what if we don’t suffer hyperinflation, war, economic collapse?

Well, my grocery bill will be *very* low for a long time! :-)

I was made a laughing stock when my extended family came over for Easter today, because they found out I have been stocking food, water and other supplies.

They too, questioned my Christian faith, quoting “the birds of the air” are being fed by God without sowing or reaping and He will provide. I know that he will, but how do we know He is not providing by putting it in our hearts to prepare?
