I Would Still Vote Obama - A self-loathing elitist responds (Buckley Barf)
forbes.com ^ | March 6, 2009 | Christopher Buckley

Posted on 03/08/2009 4:24:52 PM PDT by Free ThinkerNY

My old and dear friend Peter Robinson (we single-handedly won the Cold War together as Bush I speechwriters at the White House in the early 1980s) takes me to task Friday on Forbes.com for having recognized--finally, after all these weeks--that President Obama is a hard-left ideologue big-spender. He also congratulates David Gergen and David Brooks for similarly having come to their senses.

Robinson was much gentler on Brooks and me than Rush Limbaugh was. This week on his radio show he blasted the two of us in an Oscar Wilde mode, quipping, "Duh!"

Let's take a quick look at the tape. What I said in my Daily Beast endorsement of Obama last October was as follows:

"President Obama will (I pray, secularly) surely understand that traditional left-politics aren't going to get us out of this pit we've dug for ourselves. If he raises taxes and throws up tariff walls and opens the coffers of the DNC to bribe-money from the special interest groups against whom he has (somewhat disingenuously) railed during the campaign trail, then he will almost certainly reap a whirlwind that will make Katrina look like a balmy summer zephyr."

So much for my secular prayers. Maybe I should have tried the old-fashioned kind instead. For now, he is raising taxes and proposing Brobdingnagian government spending and expansion. It would thus seem that I was wrong about him.

Statement: "I Would Still Vote Obama - A self-loathing elitist responds..."

Response: No. The proper descriptive term for this individual is degenerate.

I'll cop to getting Obama wrong, though it seems a bit early to give up on him entirely; who knows, perhaps he'll view this egregious budget misstep as a "teachable moment."

Pathetically naive.

In 6 months, he will still have his head up his rectum. they say a liberal is a Conservative who hasn’t been mugged yet.

That too is wrong, There is no helping a true liberal, I remember once taking an 80 year old lady to the hospital, she had been raped, by a local DC resident. On the way to the hospital she was saying what a poor fellow he was, that he just needed understanding. Up until that time I felt really sorry for the old lady. After that I was just mad.

Mad at them both.

“If I had to vote all over again, I’d pull the same lever.”

In other words, Buckley, you’re feeling very defensive about having been so wrong about Obama, and this is your narcissism refusing to yield.

In other words you’re making it all about yourself, a game in which the narcissist always loses while his foolishness is more widely displayed for all to see.

Is your intellect not capable of understanding that it is by your very narcissism that you so covet the label “moderate?”

Reminds me of all the German industrialists, bankers and militarists who thought Hitler wouldn’t turn out to be so bad.

[Meanwhile, my fellow elitist David Brooks has issued a clarion call to moderates of all persuasion to rally to prevent Obama from ruining what’s left of the U.S. economy. Let us march! ]

Oh yes, let us stand in awe of that army of wet noodles led by effete limp wrists who will save us all. Like watching the French threaten to attack Luxembourg for all the sound and fury that will be.

"If I had to vote all over again, I'd pull the same lever. Maybe I'm obtuse."

And there we have it. Christopher Buckley realizes he was wrong about Obama. But he'd vote for him again. "Obtuse" is far too charitable.

The bottom line is that given the choice of McCain and Obama he'd still vote for Obama. As events unfold, it may come to pass that that is a prudent judgment. Obama may well self-destruct because he has no stop mechanism, no cultural sense of how far out of line he is heading. McCain would have been four years of unremitting pain and embarassment for anyone willing still to call himself a republican.

Nevetheless, I still think this Buckley is a jerk. Anyone whose only cred is an ancient bonmot from his father doesn't cut it with me.

“Dad is rolling in his grave”

Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason made this movie worth watching) had the same problem with his son “Well, I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again… There ain’t no way, no way, that you could come from my loins.”

And the next line was, “the first thing I’m gonna do when we get home is punch your momma right in the mouth.”
