The only upside to this that I can see is that Cuba might be open for the world to see what a craphole of a country it really is vs. the lefty Fantasy Island that it’s often portrayed.

I agree completely. It will be interesting to see what happens after the Castro family is gone.

Cuba is open to the rest of the world,,but not a lot of people go.
I kinda now favor offering the a carrot and stick. Free trade with the US, but they liberalize their economy and human rights. I don’t think they will take it.

I was there ten years ago when Clinton didn’t care who traveled to Cuba. I saw the wreckage that passes for a city, walked and drove all around, made friends, cried at the plight of the oppressed people.

But HoWood creeps travel to Havana too and never seem to see a single problem. If there’s a certain route from the airport into town that doesn’t pass through the slum that is Havana, we were not able to find it. And we looked. The airport isn’t bad. Maybe they helicopter celebs in and land on the Nacional lawn. The one hotel in town where the water and power stay on.

Yes, but it being the crappy little country will be blamed on America and it’s 40 years of embargo’s. If America was just nice it would have been a paradise. /s

Let me share with you another upside regarding Cuba that I've been pondering lately.

Suppose that the Cubans have by now had a belly full of collectivism and that, with the death of Castro and his brother, they embrace good ol' free market capitalism (or at least something markedly more capitalistic than what the US is moving towards). If this happens then there would be an explosion of opportunity in Cuba, and with its tropical climate Cuba would become a retirement mecca for US citizens.

While Cuba would be on the way up to capitalism, it would pass America as it descends down into socialism. This would represent some very powerful potential opportunity.

For the common man, however, there is a need to get in on the ground floor...and this is where (for once) Obama's cozying up to Castro could play right into the hands of capitalists.

I've had some good experience doing business in Latin America, and intend to be ready to establish a foothold in Cuba at the first opportune moment if it comes about. Maybe it will be as humble as starting a sandwich shop, but if the door opens I'll be trying my best to scramble in.

So, I say let Obama suck up to Castro, and let them learn the law of unintended consequences!
