Text-messaging teen driver causes accident with bus, East Grand Rapids police say by The Grand Rapids Press Thursday March 05, 2009, 10:21 AM

EAST GRAND RAPIDS -- A 19-year-old East Grand Rapids woman was text-messaging before her car sideswiped a Rapid GO! Bus this morning on Breton Road SE near Englewood Drive, causing a large fuel spill and minor injuries to the bus driver, police said.

The woman was ticketed for being the at-fault driver, although the exact citation was not immediately known.

The two vehicles were going in opposite directions on Breton Road when they collided just before 6 a.m., East Grand Rapids police said. A crew from Youngs Environmental has since cleaned up the fuel spill and the road has reopened.

If they’re going to try to use this to take away my ability to answer the phone when I drive, no thanks. No more nanny laws.

Amen! Wisc. is about to impose a seat belt law in order to harvest federal dollars...It is time to instigate a movement to expunge the word "liberty" from our state and federal constitutions.

My lack of buckling-up endangers no one but myself. The stateists would argue that the collective would then be liable for my medical expenses...that is a problem with socialism, not liberty.

Are they playing the "it will never be a primary offense" game with you guys? that's what they did here in Indiana in '95. it will never be made a primary offense, you'll never be pulled over just for no seatbelt, etc. Within 5 or 6 years, it was a primary offense. And after that, they started seatbelt checkpoints.

Now "click it or ticket" highwaymen rob motorists several times a year.

Yup, we’re being pulled in...it’s like we wandered too close to a black hole.

I can’t count the number of times cell phone using (and especially but not only texting) drivers have nearly caused accidents around me. I don’t know the answer, but I suspect at some point people will demand something be done. It’s unfortunate that there are so many people who are so stupid and selfish that laws will have to be enacted to protect folks.

I’m with you on buckling up laws. However, insurance companies should not have to cover you for any injuries sustained because you were not buckled up. I think we should be able to choose do do or not do things that harm only ourselves, however the burden should not be born by anyone other than the chooser.

So, there is an accident in which a seat belt wearer was killed. If he hadn’t been wearing his seat belt the insurance company gets to keep all their money..that seems right.

And don't forget all those other "important" things that people like you insist on doing while you drive, such as shaving while you drive, reading a book while you drive, putting on makeup while you drive, clipping your toenails while you drive, changing clothes while you drive, surfing the Internet while you drive, doing a crossword puzzle while you drive, playing the guitar while you drive, ...

Distracted driving is already against the law if the person is driving in a hazardous way. So you nannies are already covered. No need for a specific cell phone law.

We will get laws, whether or not you or I like it. And the majority of the public will support it, because most of them have either been in accidents or nearly been in accidents caused by morons who drive while talking on the cell phone. In order to police the streets for simple reckless driving we would need to hire millions more cops, so that’s never going to happen.
And, the states have every right to make whatever laws they want for this stuff. A federal law is another kettle of fish.

This would be an effective argument except that we routinely treat people with self-inflicted injuries and those who are victims of their own bad behavior.

Maybe, but I already assumed sarcasm and still don’t quite get your point. I’m sure you don’t like what I posted, but I’m not quite sure what your beef is.
