The Not-So-Special Relationship: Why Obama Snubbed Gordon Brown
Pajamas Media ^ | March 7 | Mike McNally

Posted on 03/07/2009 10:23:52 AM PST by AJKauf

The exchange of gifts seemed to say it all: for Barack Obama, an ornamental pen holder carved from the timbers of the HMS Gannet, a British naval vessel that took part in the battle to end the slave trade; for Gordon Brown, a box set of classic American movies on DVD.

Personally, I’m a big fan of giving DVD box sets as presents. Not only are they cheap, but they look impressive on a bookshelf and can be handily purchased at short notice, due to the fact that they’re piled high in stores that can’t get rid of them. In other words, they’re the perfect last-minute gift for someone you can’t be bothered to expend much time, money or effort on.

Maybe it was laziness on the part of the White House, or maybe it simply reflects the fact the Obama belongs to a generation that attaches more historical and emotional significance to movies than to antiques, however symbolic. Nonetheless, the British press, eager to latch on to any evidence of Obama delivering a “snub” to Brown, was suitably miffed....

Like the Clinton administration, this one is run by inexperienced juveniles and the adults are nowhere to be found.

You know what gets me? George W. Bush was supposed to be the biggest foreign policy dummy of all time, what with not knowing the name of the prime minister of Turkey off of the top of his head and all. But the foreign policy A-Team we have now can't stop making gaffes and engaging in juvenilia . It is to laugh.

How about “The Jeffersons?”

25 DVD’s of classic American movies (which probably will not play on British DVD players...different format). But I can’t tell you what the 25 movies were.

The worst is Obama got the DVDs from Columbia House under Gordon Brown’s name. He’ll be getting five more every month for ever and ever and ever...

0bama might as well have found an old concert t-shirt in the back of his closet that he hadn’t worn in a while and given that to the PM.

Can you even play them on Brit DVD players? I know there are some that are country specific.

“Birth of a Nation”? “Barbershop”? “Gods and Generals”? “My Fair Lady”? So much to choose from. However, as tsmith said, the British have a different system.

Brown clearly needed Obama more than Obama needed him.

I wouldn't count on it. baraq needs all those world leaders more than they need him. baraq is the one, after all, who said he'd restore all those partnerships W "destroyed". One of the pivots of his lying campaign was that US prestige and esteem would be brought back on his watch. So for him and his state dept to be running around gaffe-ing on a daily basis gives a hollow ring to those promises. But that's nothing new with this guy.

I'm surprised he didn't get creative and have the Engraving Bureau print up thousands of airmail stamps with upside-down biplanes on them, you know, to give as gifts to dignitaries. After all, the one that exists is valued upward of a million $. Ergo, according to his thinking, printing lots of them would be good, b/c that's a way of sharing the wealth so that all prosper. Isn't that right?

Gordon Brown is, also, nearly blind. To me, this was a deliberate insult.

I have seen this from the start as a deliberate insult. I didn't know Brown was nearly blind. That makes it even more despicable.

From the text.

Maybe it was laziness on the part of the White House.....

I hope to be excused if I digress from the subject at hand. I believe it is pertinent though.

To present an object from a British ship that was used to intercept Slavers, was an act of the Kow Tow. Simply put he, Brown was saying "See how good and kind we were". This Kow Tow seems to be the lot of many people, who cannot accept that the perpetrators of that kind of inhumanity are long gone from the White Man's world.

Now, what is important is the reaction of important Black people, who are simmering with some sort of resentment. Tavis Smiley was on the Detroit network and a eager young white fellow, approached Smiley. He then said in his Kow Tow, to this effect. He said eagerly, "knowing that the builders of the White House were slaves" and now the very President of the United States is Black.

Smiley, who is refined and educated, a genial person, suddenly changed. His face turned hard. He rasped "That is just a down payment".

People should be educated, Brown included, that to patronize and offer these depreciating comments about the wicked past, will do them no good. Some Black people will get even more annoyed, they often follow up with a put down. I do not include Black people of success who are confident within their own person. People like Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell, it is beneath them.

For the life of me, these putdowns of those who Kow Tow, I cannot understand why.

Ignorant and naive doesn’t cover it. As it happens, the “reset” button didn’t say reset, after all. It translated to “overcharged” or something equivalent.

So nix on naive. Go straight to stupid.

I read that Brown does not like/watch movies!

Small wonder -- he's dang-near blind.
