[Freezing] Students Rally for Climate Change Legislation

Harsh winter weather did not deter hundreds of young people from gathering on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol to push for new legislation on energy and global warming. Organizers say the rally was one of the largest in the U.S. focused on climate change.

Despite snow and freezing temperatures, hundreds of students -- appropriately wearing green -- rallied in front of the U.S. Capitol Monday demanding that Congress pass comprehensive energy and climate legislation.

The rally was part of a weekend conference in Washington called Power Shift 09, for young people concerned about climate change.

Katherine McEachern, a college student from New York state, says students were skipping school and braving the weather to demand action. "The snow was not going to stop us from being here," McEachern said. "We know this has to happen. We came down to D.C. to talk to our Congress people about why the U.S. needs to step up now."

The students are angry about global warming and the damage to animal habitats around the world. They say politicians must act immediately to reduce emissions, create green jobs, and work with other countries to tackle the climate crisis. [snip]

GORE HEARING ON WARMING MAY BE PUT ON ICE

Al Gore is scheduled before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday morning to once again testify on the 'urgent need' to combat global warming.

But Mother Nature seems ready to freeze the proceedings.

A 'Winter Storm Watch' has been posted for the nation's capitol and there is a potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations.

"I can't imagine the Democrats would want to showcase Mr. Gore and his new findings on global warming as a winter storm rages outside," a Republican lawmaker emailed the DRUDGE REPORT. "And if the ice really piles up, it will not be safe to travel."

A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the committee, was not immediately available to comment on contingency plans.

Global warming advocates have suggested this year's wild winter spells are proof of climate change.

"A SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING."

Recall that greenhouse hypothesis maintains that warming due to increases in the greenhouse effect is anticipated to be greatest in the winter.
