'Say please' at U. S. border nets pepper spray
Canadian traveler says demand for politeness met with use of force
Matthew Coutts, National Post Published: Wednesday, March 04, 2009
A Canadian who demanded courtesy from a U.S. border security guard says he was pepper sprayed and held in custody for three hours for asking the disrespectful officer to "say please" when ordering him to turn his car off during a search.

Maybe he should call the Human Rights Tribunal.
I did a search, title AND keywords. Go suck an egg, little man.
He used multiple examples of stories from others he worked with who had been "detained" for various minor transgressions (e.g. Where were you born? "Transylvania". OK, get a copy of your BC here before you can go). This was decades ago, so things have not really changed too much.
What will it take for these doofuses to understand that some people are just more equal than others?

I lived on the border for several years, too. Your Dad was absolutely right. Exactly what my folks said, plus, "volunteer nothing."
I would say he got what he deserved, but I didn’t see anything in the article about a hard kick in the ass— so I’ll withhold judgment.

‘I just felt I should stand my ground about it. I should not be treated like that. No matter what kind of position you are in, if you want respect you have to show respect’
The border guard did not want respect, he wanted you to turn your car engine off, which is why he said ‘turn your car engine car off’. I doubt the Canadian is stupid, a short spell of ‘agony’ and now he can flog his story around. I am sure the press of his native land will have a field day with this.
Saying that, maybe if the Southern border was protected with such guile of South-West would not be in danger of becoming part of Mexico.
I take some of that back, he is not Canadian but Portuguese. Either way, the Canadians will still love this opportunity at victimhood.
You didn’t say please.
Government servants will continue to treat us like cattle as long as we let them. It started to get especially bad when they declared war on drugs.
LOL!
I hate dealing with immigration and customs agents. Many are courteous. Many are not. It’s outrageous for a free citizen, upon returning to his own country, to be asked the purpose of his travel abroad.
***I’ve lived the majority of my life near the border, crossing many times. My Dad trained us to just do as told and give simple answers. ***
My aunt told of an incident back in the 1950’s with an idiot in the family.
They drove into Juarez for a look see. He was in his military uniform. On the way back into the US they were asked to declare nationality. He decided to get smart. “Japanese! I’m just wearing this uniform.” They spent several hours at the border with paperwork.
Women officers tend to be the worst. Doesn't matter what nationality.
IOW, act like the slave you are. No thanks.
Keep it short, sweet, simple, and do not be overfriendly. They are looking for anyone who stands out as different. You don’t want to be different unless you’ve got a couple of hours to kill.
