In a press conference in Juneau on March 3, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin revealed a plan to encourage the construction of a $4 billion in-state natural gas pipeline.
"We've got to do this project," Palin said. "We've got to see it come to fruition, or our state will be a state that imports natural gas despite the fact that Alaska is sitting on some of the world's richest reserves of gas."
On Feb. 27, 2009, the Alaskan governor submitted two pieces of legislation to the House and Senate rules committees concerning the in-state gas pipeline. The March 3 press conference offered more information about the legislation and the proposed pipeline.
"Alaskans have been excited about the progress made toward our big gas line, which will secure our fiscal future as we take this abundant resource to Lower 48 markets," Governor Palin said in a statement. "But we know that we cannot wait for that project to come to fuition before addressing our own heating and power-generating needs. My administration is committed to getting the ball rolling now on a pipeline strictly for Alaskans."
Reuters reports that the in-state pipeline would traverse some 800 miles from the North Slope to the population centers along southern Alaska's Cook Inlet. With a diameter of 24 inches, the pipeline would have a capacity for 500 MMcf/d, beginning in 2015.
The in-state pipeline project would precede the massive endeavor to build an Alaskan pipeline from the North Slope to North America, which is expected to be operational by 2018.
I look at this as signs of expected delay's on the big gasline to the south. The plans for the big project include taps that would have served this demand.
Why can’t we have leaders like this in Washington ?
If I had the money and youth to do so, I’d pack up the family and head to Sarah country !
Is this big enough to generate all their electricity? What are the using now, coal?
All their electricity generation is not in this one area, even though the majority is in South Central.
3.1% Coal
10.4% Petroleum
59.0% Natural Gas
18.3% Hydro

Depending on location, power is generated from any number of sources. In Valdez, they use hydro-electric. In Fairbanks they use coal, due to Fairbanks’ proximity to the coal mines at Healy. Wasilla buys its power from Anchorage, and Im not sure what method they use, most likely natural gas.
If they really wanted to clean up, they’d start building natural gas, nuclear and hydro power plants, then export the electricity to the lower 48 states. It has to be cheaper to build a 1,000,000 DC transmission line than to build a natural gas pipeline for the same distance. Better yet, build both at the same time.
Oh, and put a 50% environmentalist-whacko surcharge on power sold to California, Oregon and Washington, but let Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, etc. has the power at cost plus 10%. The more money the libs have to spend on electricity, the less they can donate to Moveon, Sierra Club, etc...
” It has to be cheaper to build a 1,000,000 DC transmission line than to build a natural gas pipeline for the same distance.”
Wonder if anyone has done the math? There is a DC line from the Columbia (John Day?) to the LA area that has been in place for quite a while. It must work OK.
That is not a clear winner in price. Building, Operating and Maintaining a power plant North of the Arctic Circle is also far more expensive than in the lower 48. Electrical line losses may be as large as the compressor consumptions. HVDC does help but not eliminate losses.
Also Natural Gas has more uses than just electrical power.
A pressure cut and meter station from 2,500 psi is far cheaper than Substation and Inverter station from 1 million Volt DC. Far easier to distribute along the way and at the end.
Thats the billion dollar question, America decided to vote for a false messiah full of empty promises that has the agenda to destroy America, it was too easy to fall for the conniving candyman than follow a real American leader obviously.
Now everybody is crying and making plans to move to Alaska, maybe they should because I seriously doubt Sarah will ever leave it, they lost their chance and blew it, America does not deserve Sarah Palin in the Whitehouse anymore, she is an Alaskan.
I love that woman. She is what America should be. She is a patriot.
here is another way to think of it.
I believe this country is falling apart. but people like you, me and Sarah will be here to put it back together.
saraH got all goo-goo about this line AFTER the large (and foreign owned) ENSTAR gas company started looking in to the possibility of this so-called bullet line.
It may actually have a better chance of being built. FWIW, all the electricity used by Los Anchorage could be provided by hydo-power with a 5 year build period. BUt I doubt that will ever happen....
