Deficits and Fiscal Credibility
WSJ ^ | 3/4/09 | Evan Bayh

This week, the United States Senate will vote on a spending package to fund the federal government for the remainder of this fiscal year. The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009 is a sprawling, $410 billion compilation of nine spending measures that lacks the slightest hint of austerity from the federal government or the recipients of its largess.

The Senate should reject this bill. If we do not, President Barack Obama should veto it.

The omnibus increases discretionary spending by 8% over last fiscal year's levels, dwarfing the rate of inflation across a broad swath of issues including agriculture, financial services, foreign relations, energy and water programs, and legislative branch operations. Such increases might be appropriate for a nation flush with cash or unconcerned with fiscal prudence, but America is neither.

Was nice to see this in my inbox this morning. Be nice to see a big fat legislative failure for a change.

Would be nice it if failed. Not going to happen. THEY WON, remember? They will ruin this country at such a frightening pace that in 2010, even if we take back both the House and Senate, it will be near impossible to help the country return to what our Founding Fathers designed for us.

We can dream, I suppose.

But don’t hold your breath, unless your favorite color is blue.

I think these guys may (just may) be realizing that they’re going to be the ones at the helm when the policies of the last 60 years finally bring down the horse, and they’re crapping their pants at the thought of being left holding the bag.

Well it is Evan Bayh. If he’s serious about this, he could possibly sway the mushy moderates. I’m not sayin it’s likely. But this is a welcome criticism from the “center.”

Call me cycnical, but I’m not so sure that these guys don’t go off like this when they KNOW that the spending is going to pass no matter what. Makes it look like there is some sort of adversarial element to Congress, so we keep pulling those R and D levers, but they’re really all on the same page.

Bayh voted in favor of the McCain amendment. He may be the democrat’s “Snowe” that can be split away from the left. While governor, he was somewhat fiscally responsible for a democrat.

However, he may just be positioning himself with some token “conservative” stands as his seat may be challenged by Mike Pence. Pence is getting much more favorable press. For most of his senate career, Bayh has pretty much been a non-entity.

My money goes with #2.

"There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as a result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved."
