Paterson Approval in Freefall (Poll: Rudy Giuliani crushes Paterson 53% to 38%)

The latest Marist Poll shows that just 26% of New York voters think Gov. David Paterson is doing either an excellent or good job in office. That's a drop of 20 points since the end of January.

In fact, Paterson's approval rating is the lowest any New York governor has received in the poll's nearly thirty year history.

In a general election match up, Rudy Giuliani (R) crushes Paterson 53% to 38%. The two were in a statistical tie two months ago.

In a Democratic primary, Andrew Cuomo also crushes Paterson 62% to 26%. However, Cuomo would defeat Giuliani 56% to 39%.

Maybe if Guiliani had run in 2001 NY could have been spared all this mess.

Oh well - now he can ride the growing Obama backlash to office.

Guiliani never had a chance in a national Republican contest,m but he's about the best NY Republicans can hope for.

your post answered the question I was going to ask. Does Guiliani have a legitimate shot at winning?

I think yes. If people in NY are fed up with Patterson they will go for a “moderate” Republican. Especially upstate.

Unfortunately, conservatives don’t have much of a chance, since NYC has a huge percentage of the votes.

“Maybe if Guiliani had run in 2001 NY could have been spared all this mess.”

um run for what exactly? Pataki (R) won reelection for Governor in 2002. You wanted Rudy to run against a sitting Governor of the same party? Spitzer did not become Governor until 2006.

When is the New York Governorship up for vote? 2010?

Corzine is going down in New Jersey in 2009.

When does New York vote? 2010?

We elect a new governor in New Jersey this Fall. I think Corzine is going down.

In 2001 themayor was barred from serving a third consecutive term under the city’s term-limits law; any effort to amend that law or extend his term would require the approval of the Legislature.

If he had appealed to the legislature people would be screaming at him for jobbing the system.

Ya can’t win for losing.

This is almost too good news. It looks like Cuomo will be a shoe-in if he secures the nomination. Why wouldn’t he try with these numbers? I hope Rudy wins.

“That’s a drop of 20 points since the end of January.”

I know Paterson is bad but what happened to cause that?

Rudy looks to be the best chance but only if Paterson isn’t primaried.

If NY has a brain they would elect someone like Guiliani to straighten out the state’s mess. I also think if Guiliani wanted to he could sucessfully run against their new Senator when the term is up and probably be sucessful. It’s all up to him what he wants to do.

NYC is the rub, isn’t?
Here’s an idea, make NYC and its immediate surrounding area a separate state (NY).
The rest of NY should be formed into a separate state, Upper New York maybe?

I think Rudy would make a very good governor. I did not want him at all for President, but as governor I believe he could do a lot to straighten out this sorry state in the same way he did a lot to straighten out NYC after In Lieu Of Mayor Dinkins (for all you Bob Grant fans). That doesn't mean there aren't other NY Republicans who wouldn't do equally well and I hope at least one of them runs since Rudy does seem to have a problem with actually getting involved in these races.

One thing is certain: Governor Magoo is a disaster and the alternative of Andrew Cuomo, who had a big part as Clinton HUD secretary in creating the subprime catastrophe, would be even worse.

But at the cost of two more Democrat senators?

Every once in a great while, someone who is not a raving leftist does get elected.

I think Guiliani also had a shot at Hillary’s seat in 2006 - he sure couldn’t have done worse than he did in the presidential primaries.

Paterson seems to have a big issue with wanting to tax anything and everything in the state and in a time when everyone is having trouble making ends meet this is the last thing they want or need. I’d guess that ths single issue is tanking his ratings.
