Trade nominee Ron Kirk agrees to pay back taxes DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent David Espo, Ap Reuters WASHINGTON – Ron Kirk, nominated as U.S. Trade Representative in the Obama administration, owes an estimated $10,000 in back taxes from earlier in the decade and has agreed to make his payments, the Senate Finance Committee said Monday.

The committee said the taxes arise from Kirk's handling of speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, and for his deduction of the full cost of season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team.

The disclosure made the former Dallas mayor the latest in a string of top-level Obama administration appointees found to have underpaid their taxes, following Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Tom Daschle, who withdrew as candidate for Health and Human Services secretary. Nancy Killefer, Obama's pick for chief performance officer, also bowed out amid tax problems. White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said Kirk was working to clear up "a few minor issues" uncovered by the committee and expressed confidence he would be confirmed.

Taxes aren't as bad as I thought. The rates are insane, but it looks like you are only supposed to pay them if the Senate asks you to. I can live with that.

WOW, ain't that special. So what will you do the next time no one is looking. I guess Acting President Obama can't figure out your credibility is toast after disclosures like this.

Geithner was the miracle man, anybody seen any miracles lately?

Kirk has agreed to pay back taxes? Huh? I got a tax for 2006 four months ago and it was quite clear in its DEMAND FOR THE MONEY OR I WOULD FACE CHARGES.

Oh wait! I forgot, Kirk is a Democrat, and Democrats only have to pay taxes when they feel like it. Stupid me.

DO ANY DEMOCRATS PAY THEIR TAXES?

Do any of Obama’s nominees have clean tax records?

Why don’t we list those nominees who have not had tax problems? It would be a shorter list than those nominees who are in tax trouble!

Can you imagine the reaction and drumb beat in the MSM, among Democrats, etc., if, at the beginning of the Bush administration, so many of his nominees had not paid their taxes properly and skirted the tax laws???????

“Kirk routinely gave any speaking fees he earned to Austin College, the committee said, and did not list them on his tax returns.

“Instead, the committee said he should have listed the fees as income, then claimed them as charitable donations. The estimated effect was to reduce Kirk’s tax bill by an estimated $5,800, according to the report.

He could have had the fees given directly to the college without going through him, then he would have been clear. As it is, he has to pay FICA and Medicare tax at the self-employment rate.

Does anyone ever check to see if these “promises” are ever kept? It’s bad enough that they don’t pay their taxes in the first place, and it’s easy to say they will pay them, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they never follow through and no one ever follows up to make sure that they did. They should be run out of town on a rail and never heard from again, but I would bet they just go on their merry way and still never pay up.

‘has agreed to make his payments’

That’s rich. If it was anybody else you’d be in the hoosegow.

I meant to say, they should be thrown in jail.

Looks to me like that's legal, but there's a heavy penalty. Quite a few people who have done that now have to work with Obama (so much for the "cruel and unusual" clause).

Nope. Half the Obama cabinet has done the same, and none of them are in trouble ... except for having to promise to pay.

The watchdog has turned into a lapdog. Something the founders didn’t intend when they wrote the first amendment. We need to do something about it, I think that is what Rush and his fellow talk radio host are up to.

PRAVDA has to be neutered.

Well, that's damn white of him! That is right out of the 20s and 30s and one of my Momma's favorite sayings. I have always wondered the origin of that was.

BTW...I'm changing my party affiliations so I too can game the system. At 75 I have been retired 15 years and still pay more in taxes than 95% of the rest...

He was the last Dem I ever voted for when he ran for Mayor. Hell, he lives on my street. I thought he made sense when he ran. He was for the basketball/hockey stadium being built in downtown Dallas. I agreed with that and other things. But, his wife got a $500,000 “Consulting” fee for helping to get the stadium funded by the city of Dallas. That is why I said no more Dems, ever. Even when I knew one when this year who ran for judge. (Good thing the baseball stadium is way out in Arlington, if it had been downtown I'd be an alcoholic by now. On that costly beer!!)
