Lisa Pagan, of Davidson, North Carolina, reported for duty Monday morning at Fort Benning, Georgia, with her two preschool children. She had been honorably discharged from active duty nearly four years ago but was recalled as part of the Individual Ready Reserve program.
The former Army truck driver asked for a reprieve from deployment because her husband travels for business and they would have no one to care for their children if she was sent overseas. Until Monday, her request had been denied.

Reporters don't have anything. The story writes and the commentaries write themselves.
Oye.
She is not guilty.
Women in the military. A disaster (generally).
I do think it is funny that she showed up with the kids. “I told you I got nobody to watch my kids”.
It seems to me this is exactly what general discharges are for.
She was in her 6h or 7th year, not exactly someone who should be called up. Kind of a waste that she would be called up, retrained and by the end of it, her time would be done.
One can only imagine how many extra meetings and phone calls her poor commander had to endure.
Putting women of child bearing years into the military is insane. Nothing makes me less proud of my country.
And no, I don’t support putting them in post menopause or during puberty, either.
Ridiculous.
I truly apologize. I should have worded that differently. I was referring to combat roles.
I thank you for your service. My Aunt Annie was a Navy nurse. I was in the Navy with a lot of women in various roles who also served honorably.
Is she getting out of her committments based on gender?
Would a guy get this sort of accommodation?
Did she enter into a contract? And gets to break it because she's crying?
Goose/Gander?
Just wondering.
It's what hardship discharges are for and they are Honorable. It's been around at least since WW2. At the end of WW2 my grandfather had died and my dad had to come home and take care of his mom and younger sisters. Nobody made issue of it then because even the military knew it was the right thing to do.
In this woman's case the military had gotten active duty from her and it was Honorable Service. This should have been a routine Administrative act simply requiring verification of circumstances. Heck I knew two men while I was in who got Hardships. One guy for his wife and another guy for his dad. Poor planning ion the part of congress creating an artificial shortage of active duty troops by not raising Active Duty End Strength numbers to ease off on reserve dependence is what is making this woman's circumstance much more common.
“Women in the military. A disaster (generally).”
Why do you say that? Please tell me the specific reasons.
She HAS childcare options (grandparents, whatnot), she just chooses not to use them because she doesn’t feel like she ought to have to come back.
General discharge.
The real story is that there are so few men of age willing to fight for their country that the Army has to raise the enlistment age to 45 and recall women with children to active duty. Julio wants Obama to give him more benefits. Obama should have drafted Julio’s ass right out of that town meeting. Once this enlistment is up I am getting out. At this point I can’t decide if I am still proud of my country or disgusted by it.
I clarified my remarks in response to someone else. I should have been more clear. I was referring to combat roles. I regret the way my statement was worded (and apparently, I am becoming a master at PC damage control).
I don’t think I have to expalain why women in combat roles is a bad idea.
Also, I served in the “new” Navy, where women and men deployed together, same ship, for months at a time. I’m sure you can imagine what went on.
Women have served honorably in many roles in the military. Combat roles should not be among them.
I’m surprised the Army didn’t get the kids outfitted, give ‘em some guns and sent their cute little tushies with mommy.
Women shouldnt need a child care plan If they served and have kids they should be discharged on request.
IMO women shouldnt be in combat roles, nor should they have children when in the service, when they do they should be discharged.
OK so many dont agree , but the military is no place for child care. Thats’ my opinion and I am sticking to it.
Did she have the kids after she enlisted?
