SEATTLE - The federal government has granted Washington, Oregon and Idaho permission to kill up to 85 of sea lions a year for five years, and for 2009, that window begins Monday.
Eighty sea lions have been put on a so-called "hit list" after being spotted and tagged while eating spring Chinook salmon.
Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has requested two animals, but the rest of the animals that are trapped will be shot or given lethal injections.
Animal activists continue to fight for the mammals, saying they're being unfairly scapegoated for depleting the salmon population.
The real issue is over fishing, commercial fishing, the dams, said Matt Rossell of In Defense of Animals.
It's estimated sea lions seat 4 percent of the salmon population around the Bonneville Dam.
Wildlife managers have tried traps, gates, even firecrackers to keep the sea lions away, but they still come back.
Commercial fishermen, who are allotted 13 percent of the salmon, are pleased to see some of their competition disappear in the coming days.
"They don't belong here, they're sea lions, they belong in the sea, that's the way I feel about it, said Roy Alway.
The only sea lions that can be killed are the California sea lions. There are also Stellar sea lions near the dam, but they are considered endangered and cannot be harmed

Bonneville dam is a long way from the ocean.Yes it is, about 140 miles.
It's pretty difficult for salmon to get past sea lions when those sea rats wait for the salmon in the ladders like this one at Bonneville Dam.

I was at Oregon City during a salmo run. Are those seals or sea lions on the rocks by the falls?

This whole situation is insane.
Why is the Federal Government involved at all? The Feds couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag. And just how easy is it to tell the difference between a California sea lion and a Stellar sea lion? Are the California ones blonde? Do they eat the same fish?
Where's my copy of the Tenth Amendment, dang it!

I’ve never been over there but I’m pretty sure they’re sea lions. Fishermen have a problem with them from the coast on up to Bonneville Dam and rivers that flow into the Columbia.

These animals need to be managed like all other beasts. They can not be allowed to over populate their resource. That said, there will always be a demand for seal and sea lion fur legally harvested.
Game management works. Use it.

Wonder what sea lion jerky tastes like?
Oh wait - any Inuit can answer that question.
Hey, nothing beats killing a pest that is good to eat, wild hog for example (long as they’re not too big).

A real wildlife manager would approve of this method. Sea Lions are no different than coyotes or wolves, when left unchecked they become a problem to livestock or fisheries.

Sea Lions....its what for dinner....

You are an idiot. From Texas no doubt without a clue of what is going on in other areas of the country.

Game management doesn’t require that the animal be eaten. Bears and mountain lions are all managed species that don’t require they be eaten, although anyone wasting mountain lion is missing a real treat. It tastes like the finest white pork.
