A former Miss North Dakota, who's been working in Iran as a freelance reporter, is being detained in undisclosed location there.

31-year-old Roxana Saberi has reported for NPR, "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer", and Fox News Channel, among others as the Tehran bureau chief for Feature Story News. Her press credentials were revoked by the Iranian government more than a year ago, but she was being allowed to file short stories until her arrest about a month ago.

NPR reports the Saberi family decided not to go public with Saberi's arrest until yesterday. Her father, who still lives in Fargo, last spoke to her on February 10 and said he doesn't know where she's being held or what the charges are.

Not looking good for her. They seem to be especially harsh on people of persian descent and she’s a former Miss ND as well.

“They seem to be especially harsh on people of persian descent”

Aren’t all Iranians of Persian descent? I mean, that’s what they are Persians, no?

Yeah but I’m talking about all irani/persians living outside the country. A few years back it was a Canadian journalist who died in an iranian prison.

I don’t know, but an earlier story I read said that (per her father) she was arrested for buying a bottle of wine. If true, she is one heck of a stupid young woman.

I need a little help here... only males can buy wine... or is it illegal for alcohol to be made/purchased in Iran by men &/or women?

Since alcohol is strictly prohibited by Islam, I would assume it is illegal for anyone to buy in Iran. And if you’re a female US citizen who’s gone there as a reporter, and already attracted the Iranian government’s attention/wrath sufficiently to get your journalist credential’s pulled, it occurs to me that it would be extraordinarily stupid to provoke them with something like buying alcoholic beverages. There are some things worth incurring the wrath of tyrants over (e.g. getting the word out about dissidents they’re torturing, etc), but buying alcoholic beverages isn’t one of them.

This presents a problem and an opportunity.

The problem: How do we induce the rest of the NPR Socialsts to hop on a plane to Tehran to register their liberal indignation with their ideological ragheaded masters?

The opportunity: How do we insure that the Revolutionary Guard “greet” them when they arrive?
