Authorities have seized the first distribution-sized package of "processed DMT" in New Jersey and warned Thursday that the hallucinogenic drug once popular in the '60s could be making a comeback. The drug, dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, differs from other hallucinogens because its powerful effects are relatively short-lived, about 45 minutes to an hour, giving rise to its street-name as the "businessman's trip," authorities said.
Two state troopers seized 1 1/4 pounds of the processed DMT valued at $127,000 during a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike in Secaucus, state police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said. The troopers were on patrol around 4 a.m. Saturday when they stopped a southbound car weaving on the roadway's eastern spur, Fuentes said. The driver, Yusuf Samantar, 33, of Newark, a computer software engineer, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after failing field sobriety tests, he said.
A subsequent search turned up the drug package resulting in one of the largest processed DMT seizures in the Northeast, Fuentes said. "Although this is a drug that's been around for some time, the quantity is troublesome to us," Fuentes said. Though not known to be lethal, the intense hallucinations triggered by DMT could lead to dangerous behavior, and the drug has been reported to cause seizures, nausea, cramping, violent vomiting and memory loss, among other effects, the officials said.
DMT's reemergence poses a significant public safety threat, said Gerard McAleer, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New Jersey division. McAleer joined Fuentes and other officials at a Newark news briefing to raise public awareness about the drug. "This is dangerous. It's not worth the 45 minutes of euphoria," said McAleer. "People could die. People will get sick from it."
DMT is extracted from Mimosa hostilis, a Brazilian root bark that can readily be purchased on the Internet from botanical suppliers, said Thomas Blackwell, director of the DEA's Northeast Laboratory. Common household chemicals are then used to extract the DMT, he said. The root bark can be ingested as a tea, pulverized into a powder, or processed into pure DMT crystals and snorted, smoked or injected, Blackwell said.
"The availability because of that Internet sales aspect is growing," said McAleer. "We want the public to recognize that because it comes from a botanical, because it comes from a root bark, this is not safe. It's not safe to alter your mind. The substance in the bark is illegal." He said parents should be aware of the threat and concerned if their children are buying botanicals over the Internet.
Until now, the drug has not been seen in New Jersey, but DMT labs were recently busted in Buffalo, N.Y., and Connecticut, and the DEA has tracked its emergence in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area, where it is sold for $200 per gram, the officials said. "We're trying to hit it before it becomes popular," McAleer said. The DEA has prepared materials to advise all law enforcement of the potential dangers, how to recognize it, and what to do when finding DMT, he said.
Assistant Hudson County Prosecutor Gene Rubino said Samantar, who is originally from Somalia, was charged with DWI, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession with intent to distribute. He was released on $150,000 bail Tuesday.
No thanks, I think I'll pass on this one. Parents watch out where your kids surf on the net and if they have a new botany or gardening hobby you better know what they are growing
I thought I read DMT is a Deleriant, not a Hallucinogen.
Sounds like another one of those bailout bills from Congress.
I don’t know, what’s the difference?
I’ll have to ask my friend the exact difference, but I think deleriants make you think what you are experiencing is real. For example, PCP is a deleriant.
wow...I only did DMT once, it’ll blow yer head off for about 30 minutes or so
Before anyone asks, this sorta sums it up.....very very strong stuff, thank God it only lasted a half hour...like if LSD and Mushrooms were concentrated like crack...but even more potent.
DMT is sorta like the end of the road hallucinogenic wise...I’m sure there are stronger mind altering substances but I never found any. Sandoz refrained from making it because they feared governmental abuse...
a brown sugar rock candy looking powder that one smoked or very stupid and crazy folks injected.
I think stuff like DMT is what motivated Castenada more than LSD or Psylocibin
“[The feeling of doing DMT] is as though one had been struck by noetic lightning. The ordinary world is almost instantaneously replaced, not only with a hallucination, but a hallucination whose alien character is its utter alienness. Nothing in this world can prepare one for the impressions that fill your mind when you enter the DMT sensorium.”
— Terence McKenna
Never heard of it - sounds like some bad stuff though
lol, yep it’s definitely on my don’t do list today
i’d probably rather have to sit thru 18 hours of women’s studies or race relations in the 21st century at Sarah Lawrence than smoke one little clip of DMT today
Uh no thanks....going to sleep and having great dreams is trippy enough for this ole gal.
I like to put on EWTN Catholic tv and go to sleep/dream.
It is a heavenly exprerience. : )
For the rest of you curious cats:
Smokable Dimethyltryptamine from Organic Sources

btw for reference only
I’m not recommending it and it’s been 35 years since I took it once.
I don’t advise anyone to take hallucinogens.
Many folks cannot handle them and can be psychologically damaged for life.

Its not worth it.

Forget water-boarding....use DMT on the ...ahem...’detainees’
Picture this: you ask them a series of important questions.
The you set them in a chair facing a small guillotine and hit them with a doze of DMT . 45 mins later you ask them again...
I knew that.
I know of you as a FR member.
I should have put a tongue in cheek tag on my rather have cool dreams ( the safe way to enjoy a trip esp the feeling of flying) at night statement.
I have the memory from 4yrs old of visiting an older brother in a psych. institute he had to stay in for few weeks due to an over dose of LSD in 1964.
How about this — put the former Gitmo detainee in a room with just a table, a chair, and a book, just after giving them a generous dose of DMT.
On every other wall are mirrors.
On the other walls are life-sized pictures of Helen Thomas.
And in the book on every page are — you guessed it — pics of Helen Thomas.
They’ll never recover from that little trip.
You know Mr. Blackwell if you are worried about more people making and using a drug like this, maybe it isn't such a good idea to basically tell people how to make it. Anyone who reads this now knows all they have to do is get on the Internet and they can order this root to make DMT using nothing but household chemicals. Surely detailed instructions are available on the Net too.
Ughh...is this what the drug warriors have come to?
Apparently, DMT is found in the human body.
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family. DMT is found not only in several plants,[3] but also in trace amounts in humans and other mammals, where it is originally derived from the essential amino acid tryptophan, and ultimately produced by the enzyme INMT during normal metabolism.[4] The natural function of its widespread presence remains undetermined
I have tried DMT a few times and it’s literally a death experience, I remembered (subjectively of course) the very first memory I had, it sucked me into this vibrant world of light but was the most solid, most real space I have ever subjectively experienced. Crystal clarity, my eyes are foggy but this place was pristine, untouched... it pang-ed of “eternity” screaming silence at lightspeed.
It’s definitely not a recreational experience, and after having “broken-through” I can smell it all over the place and have came to the realization that the color of thought and feeling itself seems to be a threshold like action of endogenous DMT or something, at least the imagination.
None of this can be proven, as its just my subjective experience of it, but wow. Certainly has changed my life, reminding me where I came from and hopefully where I will end up... though... work needs to be done. Obviously we are human for a reason, and it’s not a co-incidence we aren’t exactly living in eternal paradise just yet.
Take this account with a grain of salt please. And don’t take DMT or the idea of it lightly. When it comes to the most powerful experience you can possibly have without actually dieing... DMT is it. YOU DIE on DMT. But somehow you end up safely back in your body, and having gone through that, seeing life through the eyes of someone who had just died... it can change your life for the better. But be ready for it. Be ready to die, and I don’t mean have the world go black, I mean, be ready to face ALLL that karma you forgot about, be ready to face the instantaneous wrath of God. If your not ready, your seriously fucking yourself over and im sorry... Don’t even think about touching DMT this lifetime until you get your act together enough, or are stupid enough.
Personally, I don’t touch the stuff anymore and haven’t for the longest times. It demands too much of a person, its just hard to stand it. hope that gives some people an insight from someone who has done it, if you wanted to hear.
