Privacy advocates are issuing warnings about a new radio chip plan that ultimately could provide electronic identification for every adult in the U.S. and allow agents to compile attendance lists at anti-government rallies simply by walking through the assembly.
The proposal, which has earned the support of Janet Napolitano, the newly chosen chief of the Department of Homeland Security , would embed radio chips in driver's licenses, or "enhanced driver's licenses."
"Enhanced driver's licenses give confidence that the person holding the card is the person who is supposed to be holding the card, and it's less elaborate than REAL ID," Napolitano said in a Washington Times report.
REAL ID is a plan for a federal identification system standardized across the nation that so alarmed governors many states have adopted formal plans to oppose it. However, a privacy advocate today told WND that the EDLs are many times worse.
Radio talk show host and identity chip expert Katherine Albrecht said REAL ID earned the opposition of Christians because of its resemblance to the biblical "mark of the beast," civil libertarians opposed it for its "big brother" connotations and others worried about identity theft issues with the proposed databases.
"We got rid of the REAL ID program, but [this one] is way more insidious," she said.
Enhanced driver's licenses have built-in radio chips providing an identifying number or information that can be accessed by a remote reading unit while the license is inside a wallet or purse.
The technology already had been implemented in Washington state, where it is promoted as an alternative to a passport for traveling to Canada. So far, the program is optional.

If they go through with this, people will be bringing more than just tea to the next “party”.
The only way to defeat the thing is to prepare now for the next election and vote those people out of office. Our local paper here was full of porkfat yah yah yesterday about how much good free moneythat Udall is bringing to the locals. They are too mesmerized by the editor to realize that it is all coming out of their business’ and pockets for the next 50 years.
Microwave, 5 seconds... problem solved.
>More Reasons in Support of Civil Disobedience.
Agreed. We are NOT cattle, we are men... and it’s time we stepped up to the plate and re-taught Government WHO’s in charge.
>These jackbooted thugs need to be made to stop these illegal, immoral assaults on the freedoms guaranteed to us by the Constitution.
Agreed, MADE, by force, because they have already shown that they cannot, and will not, listen to their “loyal subjects”, their serfs.
>I fear for the future of this grand experiment.
>Its time to take back the country.
Actually, THAT is the sort of attitude and expression that makes me HOPE for the grand experiment.
...Just wait until they attach your “political ideology” to the card and use that as a filter to have “mysterious” vote dropping/filtering.... [/cynic]
“...but I would rather be up to my keister in Mexicans...”
I understand your sentiment, but you might want to reconsider your phraseology there!
LOL!
“More expensive scanners have ranges of over 100 yards.”
Yes, but the tags are the size of a small wristwatch. Not the same thing as the tags they put on drivers licenses.
Microwave it for about 5 seconds.
Microwave on high for 15 seconds, turn over and repeat until chips are nice and crispy.
Serve with a MYODB and top with F-U-B-O.
Well, possibly, but I’ll believe it when I see it. From everything I’ve seen they don’t work that well outside of lab conditions.
It might be that your info is old. They have been working on improving range and decreasing size and cost for years.
Microwaving it is quick and effective. Works great on those credit cards with RFID.
My son accidentally sends a game cartridge for his Nintendo DS through the laundry every know and again. I’m amazed that they still work.
I want to post her picture. Please help.
If I’m not mistaken, this is the equivalent of the chip in the “passport card” - which is a card very much like a drivers licence (same design and dimensions as a DL).
The passport card can take the place of a book passport, for (land) borders around the continental US, such as the border with Mexico, Canada or I believe ship crossings to Gulf coast area vacation destinations. I don’t think those rules are in place yet - but they roll out some time this year? (you thought the digital tv’s created confusion...) You’ll still need a passport book if you’re flying into Mexico or Canada - but at the border a passport card will be acceptable. You’ll actually need either the card or an actual passport, to get back into the States once the rules come online - so these are becoming more important.
The passport card has an RFID chip with an identifying number broadcast. Allegedly there’s no biometric information on the chip - that’s evidently held in a database, and the identifying number is the database key.
Those passport cards come with a tiny sleeve, and the instructions state the card should be kept in the sleeve when not being presented.
There are a number of shield options, some available from better travel supply sites, and directly from vendors.
The chip in the passport card (the one similar to a DL) is not the same chip which is in the passport book - the chip in the passport book does have biometric information. However - allegedly - the passport book itself is shielded when closed, and the biometric info is supposed to be encrypted pretty strongly.
I think one state might already have an RFID license equivalent to the passport card - Washington maybe?
The thinking seems to be, one of the enhanced DL’s can take the place of a passport under the new rules for land borders, so people who live near a border might want one. You have to actually request one, for now anyway.
‘Course they said you couldn’t get a ticket for not wearing your seat belt, when that law started out.
Didn’t take long for that so-called protection to fall by the wayside...
Anyway, I think that’s all pretty accurate.
Yeah, it is old actually. Been 7 or 8 years since I fooled with them.
