the self deprecating was at the end. and even that wasn’t really as it was more of an attempt to remind folks that he’s loaded.
the attack was at the beginning. He says it’s great to see so many conservative leaders and then goes on to single her out for not being there, but still alledgedly pursuing a multimillion dollar book deal.
again, it’s not a huge deal or anything, but just a little something that rubbed me the wrong way.
I haven’t read any of the other speeches, but I’d bet that if you go over all of them from this weekend, you won’t find any other speaker who singles out another conservative in that way. Not one. You won’t find any other speaker cracking jibes at someone else’s expense.
I think you would really have to start out with a load of resentment for the man in order to interpret that as anything but a self-deprecating joke. The obvious meaning was that nobody was interested in what he had to say, while there is a huge amount of interest in Sarah Palin. It was a nod to her popularity.
