Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, tried unsuccessfully Wednesday afternoon to kill legislation to give the District full voting rights in Congress. Mr. McCain called for a constitutional point of order to question the legality of giving the District voting rights.
The vote failed 36-62.
Under the legislation proposed in Congress this year, the Democratic-leaning District would get a House member with full voting rights, and Republican-leaning Utah would get a fourth House seat.
Supporters think the bill finally has good chance of being passed, after a decades-long effort, because of Democratic gains in Congress in the November elections and because President Obama has said he would sign the bill.
However, opposition from Republicans, including amendments, again could kill the legislation.

why would anyone trust McCain?
elections have consequences. Alas, wish the principled conservatives who have sat out the last two elections would have thought about that.
Oh well, water under/over the bridge.
“principled conservatives” = oxymoron.
McCain fails Fixed it for ya. |

don’t think I can agree with that one. but to each his or her own.
People that live in the district knew what they were getting into... if they want representation they should move to MD or VA.
I always hate to see people blame voters for the failure of loser politicians that can't get people out to vote for them.
I heard someone say today that the ultimate goal is to have two senators from DC.
This amuses me to no end... should DC get this, their status changes. The politico’s might want to see just what they’ll lose when this happens.
Also, should this happen, this might change the incorporation situation with the Heller decision. Better be careful what you wish for libs...
Mike
Above and beyond that, voters have a responsibility through voting to try and prevent what is now happening: An all out assault on the Constitution.
Politics is almost always the picking of the lesser of two evils.
Reagan is the only exception I know of in my life (40 or so).
Elections may have consequences but I don’t believe Congress can simply change the constitution.
since when has that ever stopped them?
They can’t. If it passes, it will pass because people voted to dilute their own votes. And if it passes, it will spawn the Mother of All Constitutional lawsuits.
This country has gone mad, plain and simple. How could members of Congress NOT know that this is unconstitutional?
STATES get representation - nobody else. If this nonsense passes, does it not mean that whoever is in power could vote to enfranchise, or disenfranchise, whomever they chose?
In the mid-1800’s, the portion of DC that was ceded by Virginia asked to be taken back, and Virginia accepted them - which is why DC is smaller today than it was then.
If those people living in DC now want representation, they should petition the state of Marylamd to take them back. At that point, the District would consist of the White House, the Capitol and the mall.
remember that Kennedy is a spineless blob. his votes are determined by which way he falls (I think).
hey at least mac knew it was not constitutional to give voting rights to a CITY. that priveledge is reserved for STATES.
Am I just crazy (rhetorical question, no response required) or wouldn’t this require an amendment to the Constitution? Not just passage from a majority of the Senate and House?
Or is this some kind of vote to get an amendment to the floor to be voted on?
I don't disagree, as I've always picked the lesser of the two evils. I'm just so sick of hearing about the urban legend of "conservatives staying home to teach them a lesson" to explain the past two elections. The fact is in 2006 democrats ran many candidates that were to the right of republican incumbents in some districts, combined with the media propaganda barrage, and hatred of Bush. In 2008, Hussein was elected by a media driven propaganda operation, and was put over the top by financial manipulation by unknown wealthy individuals that brought the financial market to its knees. I'm sure a few conservatives DID stay home, but it probably wasn't enough effect the outcomes.
