Obama Errs in Saying Americans Invented Automobiles
WASHINGTON -- It was clear from President Obama's address to Congress on Tuesday that he's a believer in the American automobile industry, but his grasp of automotive history suggests he could use a refresher course.
Obama said his administration won't protect auto makers from their own bad practices but is committed to a retooled auto industry, saying, "I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it."
[snip]
History always was a weak subject for the One. Or was that the None?
Am I the only one who did not hear Obama speak tonight? Busy partying... Happy Mardi Gras.. all! Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday... so party now. you have about 25 minutes left.
There is no evidence that Obama ever attended schools in the US.
Check out what Étienne Lenoir did in 1863 sometime. But regardless, the automobile was not invented in the US.
However, even when he fibs, he does it better than anyone has ever fibbed before ;-)

...the nation that invented the automobile...
So did the Germans invent the "automobile?"
Elwood Haynes invented the four-wheeled automobile later on, but he also invented stainless steel.
Depends on what you mean by "automobile" and what kind of trim you like for your kitchen.
Was there a timed posting on an MSM site of this?
Wonder if they picked it up from this earlier FR post;

When the Depression happened, William McKinley got in his automobile and went down to the TV station to tell Americans it would all be OK

> The problem: The credit for internal combustion engines generally is given to German engineer, Karl Benz, who designed and built the world’s first practical automobile in 1885.
True. And credit for the first powered heavier-than-air aeroplane is generally given to New Zealand farmer Richard Pearse, whose aeroplane flew over the fields of Canterbury a full year before the Wright Brothers flew at Kittyhawk.
But what I was REALLY thinking was: we DID invent the airplane, so why not have the government help out Boeing, that way they can go down the tubes too.
Maybe, but the beaches at Kitty Hawk are so much better.
Nope.
Am I the only one who did not hear Obama speak tonight?
Nope.
To the camps for both of you!
Worth noting ~ due to the then very high German immigrant composition of the Central and Northern Indiana population, and its close relationship to the educated classes then living in the new German industrial cities (Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Koln (Cologne) and so forth, whatever they were up to in Deutschland was known about in Indiana about as fast as cousins could send letters to each other.
I took a quick look to find out where Haynes found his "gasoline engine", but no one is really clear on the matter ~ but he did not design it, just bought it on an open market that was selling gasoline engines in small town Indiana in 1893!
Since I quit watching the news on Nov 4, 2008, I did not even know Obama was even going to be on TV tonight. It is like he doesn’t even exist.
LOL - I watched Obama and wish I had not watched Jindal. Conservatives would have been better served with no rebuttal than what was thrown out and complicated with audio problems IMO.
