TOWN NEWS BRIEFING
Hartford Courant, The (CT) - Friday, July 25, 2003

EXCERPT

U.S. Senator Buys Boat;

Proceeds Go To Towns

CHESTER — U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd of East Haddam is the new owner of a motorized boat that was purchased in the summer of 2000 for a joint Chester-Deep River police patrol on the Connecticut River.

The boat was purchased for $14,000 with a mix of town funds and private donations. Deep River First Selectman Richard Smith decided to discontinue his town’s involvement in the river patrol earlier this year after Chester and Haddam received funding from the Connecticut Yankee nuclear power plant to acquire a larger boat to patrol the riverfront in the two towns.

Smith and Chester First Selectman Martin Heft decided to sell the boat and split the proceeds equally between the two towns. Heft said Dodd ‘s bid of $5,500 was the higher of two bids received in two rounds of bids for the boat. The other bid was $4,700.

Heft said Dodd , who heard about the boat from a friend in Chester, has already taken possession of the craft. ``He’s already been out on the river in it,’’ Heft said.
