VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) - A rocket carrying a NASA global warming satellite has landed in the ocean near Antarctica after a failed launch. The Taurus XL rocket carrying the Orbiting Carbon Observatory blasted off early Tuesday morning from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base. But launch managers say that several minutes later, the payload fairing, which shelters the satellite, apparently failed to separate from the launch vehicle.

Taurus program manager John Brunschwyler says the rocket splashed into the ocean. He's with the rocket's maker, Orbital Sciences Corp.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP)—A NASA satellite designed to track carbon dioxide emissions failed to reach orbit early Tuesday in a mishap that could jeopardize its mission to better understand climate change.

The Taurus XL rocket carrying the Orbiting Carbon Observatory blasted off as planned at 1:55 a.m. PST from Vandenberg Air Force Base on California's Central Coast.

Several minutes into the flight, launch managers declared a "contingency plan" after the payload fairing failed to separate from the launch vehicle. The fairing protects the spacecraft as the launch vehicle flies through the atmosphere

Yep, but this is an actual article, not quoting radio, so it’s not like a repeat.

There’s an earlier thread also quoting news sources without an article.

Well, I have to say that this failure is a fitting commentary on the whole global warming scam...

Hope NASA had insurance...

“Hope NASA had insurance...”

They didn’t pay for it, we did.

Oceans are rising!!! It’s indisputable! Because of all the Global Warming satellites falling in.

They didn’t pay for it, we did.

Now we get to pay twice.

It’s all that CO2 in the atmo, made the air too hard for the rocket to push through, so the failure of the satellite is proof of gorebull warming!

I bet an Antarctic ice shelf breaks off because of the splash. And it’s all Global Warming’s fault.

The words SABOTAGE comes to mind. A successful mission would have allowed accurate measurements to be taken which could then be used by REAL scientist to refute the CO2 storyline.

The words SABOTAGE comes to mind.

Doubtful. OTOH, the words "forgot to remove the 'Remove Before Flight' pin" does indeed spring to mind.

Orbital Sciences has had a rather spotty quality record over the past few years -- a quality control issue for the fairing separation system would not be unlikely.

The good/bad news is that even though the satellite is not above the atmosphere, it is still transmitting valuable data. The bad news is from the data, we can see that global warming is accelerating much worse than we previously thought

So was it Gore’s blueprint that they used for this fancy CO2 rocket? Wonder how much CO2 that thing gave off during the launch. Or wait, could it have been powered by fry grease, or ethanol?
