THE company behind GORE-TEX waterproof clothing are closing their bagpipe operation.
The manufacturing workforce at WL Gore's bagpipe and filters plant in Livingston, West Lothian, have been told their jobs will go and the factory will cease production by June.
The factory employs more than 40 people and 25 are to lose their jobs over the next few months.
In a statement yesterday, the company confirmed the redundancy consultation process, adding: "The decision has been made to relocate some of our operations."
A spokesman refused to comment on where the jobs would be moved to.
He said: "At the moment, this is confidential. We are in discussion with our associates and are complying with the law in the consultation process."
Insiders say the 16 who will remain are IT and sales staff, meaning production of the world market-leading bagpipe bag will cease if a buyer is not found.
At an average retail cost of £100, the Can more bagpipe bag is a favourite across the world.
It is made from a GORETEX membrane, the world's first synthetic bag designed to replace traditional sheepskin and hide bags.
It is favoured because it is almost maintenance-free.

OK. So I won't be the first one here with a cheap shot.
Do you know why bagpipers always walk while they play? They're trying to get away from the awful noise.

Hopefully there will be a few pipers and bags left to mourn the death of this republic.

Since they’ve stopped interrogating those guys in Guantanamo, bagpipe demand is way down.

You know the difference between a piper and a skunk lying dead in the road, don’t you?
There’s skid marks in front of the skunk.

You can always tell Scots; we love the pipes.
I am having them played at my funeral. They were played at my mother’s.
