China lodged a formal protest with Russia on Friday after a Russian warship fired on a Chinese cargo vessel, in an escalating dispute between the two giant neighbors.

China's official Xinhua news agency said the warship sank the vessel in Russian waters last Sunday off the port of Vladivostok. Seven Chinese crew members are still missing, while three sailors were rescued.

Russian media say the ship, named New Star, was being pursued by Russian border guards and sank in a storm after the shooting.

On Friday, Russian news agency Interfax quoted the Russian foreign ministry as saying that the captain of the Chinese ship was to blame for violating border laws and refusing to stop when warning shots were fired.

"We regret the tragic consequences of these events. However, we lay the whole responsibility for what happened on the New Star captain, who acted extremely irresponsibly," Interfax quoted ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko as saying.

But China has grown increasingly angry at what it believes is an inadequate attempt by Russia to find the missing sailors, and its failure ...

China’s probably taking some internal heat over the missing/dead sailors - Russia will pay a ransom and they will make nice again (maybe)

The two fought all the time when they were BOTH communist. Now that the Russkies are going back to the ways of Lenin and Marx, old times are here again.

Nixon went to China mostly to scare the Soviets and it was during a time when China and Russia had already come close to open war.

It was Russia had the most nukes and China the most people and if not for the global radioactive fall-out it would have been nice for the two to destroy each other.

China is still more socialist than Russia and we are so in debt to China we will have no choice but to subsidize them in any war they enter.
In fact,we should hope the Chicoms win fast and win big so that they will stop cashing in on all their hundreds of billions of US T-Bonds as we are in enough economic trouble.
To tell the truth,Russia could defeat China by defeating US—this would remove most of their assets because we would not be able to finance their armed forces.
Sad yet unavoidable reasons we “socialists” must pull for China.

It would be called it the “Wal-mart war.”

That scene had always bothered me. It gave the impression of the Russians being the formidable world power and China an over grown village. I'm happy that global influence has shifted such that China has more than Russia (and that gap continues to grow :)
