Filmmaker Spike Lee led the call for celebrities to join a boycott of the New York Post Friday during a raucous protest of a racially charged cartoon.
Joined by his 11-year-old son, Lee told a crowd of about 300 people that he has bought the tabloid in the past - but no more.
And he suggested athletes and entertainers shun the paper's writers because of Wednesday's cartoon, which compared President Obama with a crazed chimp by some interpretations.
"This is not the end," Lee told the demonstrators, who marched in front of the Post's offices near Rockefeller Center shouting, "Shut it down."
"It's not just black folks. It's an insult to everybody."

spike should try to be more relevant in his next life.
Hate-filled, agenda-driven, anti-freedom collectivists DO NOT LIKE CARTOONS.
Thanks for the links. BTTT!
What does WGAF mean? I dont do a lot of texting or blogging - I dont know what that means.
So the cops shot a subprime-ate, so what.
I think in retaliation we should boycott Spike Lee’s films... oh, wait, people already do that... and not because they’re making a political statement. They stayed home from “miracle at st. anna” and everything else he’s done in the last 6 years because Spike Lee is a talentless hack and his movies suck. Well, there goes our boycott.
Dear Spike,
I am anxiously awaiting your next movie about the death causing ice storm that occurred this year and the Obama response. You could call it Katrina Revisited.
Sincerely,
Clint Eastwood
Just about every President since Washington has been explicitly mocked in political cartoons. The current “offending” cartoon is not even explicitly about Obama. He did not write this stimulus bill, as much as he loves to call it “his plan.”
Yet prominent blacks claim that when the new somewhat black President is, even arguably, mocked in a cartoon, it is racism.
Poor, poor black newsmakers. So delicate. We need to be very careful around them, as they don’t have the right kind of SKIN. Yes, black leaders have a very THIN skin, unlike that of other celebs and politicos, and cannot TAKE mocking like real people can. POOR, POOR black newsmakers. The precious little things are not meant to take it. We need to be very soft and gentle with black leaders, as they are “special” and have very “special” needs.
For 8 years the press and dems skewered President Bush.
But because this assclown socialist is a black guy we are all supposed to shut up and be respectful?
F that.
I’ll call this assclown a “magic negro” and a fraud until his gestapo forces silence my ass.
I just took out a subscription to the NY Post...and I live in the South!
I saw the cartoon and didn’t think of Obama as a chimp, but the Congress as out of control.
As a simian Irish Ameican and W/ Bush known as ‘chimpie’, I am obviously not clear on the 1870 depictions of blacks as primates.
As for racism, I’m glad that Eric Holder wants an honest dialogue on race. First up is affirmative action (the two Obamas as prime examples), next black crime then illegitimate births. he’s right, we have been cowards by taking those topics off the table.
Not being a New Yorker, I had never bought a copy of the NY Post until today when I bought two and will continue to buy it until the racist Sharpton and his gang of thugs get lost.
Did Spike also call for a boycott of The Washington Post after their cartoon of Condi Rice as Aunt Jemima? Or, Clarence Thomas as Uncle Tom?
