According to Wikipedia, in Massachussets, vacant Senate seats can only be filled by special election.

I guess you don't know Massachusetts. When Romney was governor, the governor could appoint a replacement senator. That was until Kerry ran for president. The Democrat majority congress fearing a Republican appointment changed the law for a special election to take place. If governor Patrick has a pick that the Congress approves, expect the law to change back. It's safe, easy, and quick.
