The billionaire banker accused of scamming $8 billion, R. Allen Stanford, was located by FBI officials today and served with civil papers by the SEC, putting an end to a nationwide search.

Stanford later turned in his passport to federal prosecutors, saying "he would not flee," according to one of Stanford's lobbyists, Ben Barnes.

Stanford's lobbyist Barnes, a former Texas public official, said Stanford had hired Brendan Sullivan of the Washington firm Williams Connolly.

Sullivan is considered one of the capital's top criminal defense lawyers who has handled a long list of high-profile clients including Oliver North and Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska).

How'd that work out for Ted anyways???

"I won't flee."

Yeah, right. This guy could use pocket change to by a $50 million dollar private jet, and hit the road to the Caribbean.

So let me get this right....

If some poor guy walks into a store and steals something he needs that costs $20, he gets cuffed and hauled to jail (as he should), but this Stanford guy, like Maddoff, steal the monetary equivalent to the median US income for 2007 of 160,000 working families, and he just walks with paperwork ?

I've had enough of this crap.

Go ahead and check my numbers...

8,000,000,000 / 50,000 = 160,000.

“How’d that work out for Ted anyways??? “

I don’t think that was Sullivan’s fault. His usual strategy is to pick apart the prosecution’s case for years, with endless motions and discovery demands. Stevens insisted upon an immediate trial, in an attempt to win re-election. Stevens also insisted upon taking the stand to testify. I’m sure both went against Brendan Sullivan’s advice.

Not to get off topic but I knew something was up on “Rathergate” when Barnes was involved in the show. Barnes involved with Standford means this could get more interesting than it already is.

“If he does, he’s got a real problem because he knows an awful lot. And I would suspect there are a number of people, very heavyweight people, throughout the offshore world and in other jurisdictions who really don’t want to be associated with Mr Stanford and are not going to be pleased if he talks. So this man has a very, very serious problem.”

Stanford Retains Williams & Connolly
February 19, 2009 4:40 PM

Texas financier R. Allen Stanford who was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission this week with fraud to the tune of $8 billion, has retained Williams & Connolly — the home of famed white collar attorney Brendan Sullivan — to represent him, according to two sources familiar with the case. Calls to Williams & Connolly were not returned.
