I still call it Bombay. It’s not like we call Munich ‘Munchen’ or Florence ‘Firenze’ which is what they’re called locally. In the English speaking world its Bombay, to the Marathi-speakers who inhabit that region of India, it’s Mumbai, it doesn’t mean we’re obligated to do so.
I also object because the name change was pushed through by a bunch of Hindu fascists in the Shiv Sena Party who have been known to be involved in violence against Christians and anyone who isn’t Hindu...
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way
That's nobody's business but the Turks.
Istanbul!
Thanks for the laughs!
I think it’s OK as long as you get drunk first, then the lashes, might hurt the other way.
:^)
The difference is that India is an English speaking country (it has two official languages - Hindi and English - but Parliament conducts proceedings primarily in English, the Supreme Court conducts proceedings in English, and all laws are written in English).
Mumbai is the official English language name of the city. They didn’t just change the pronunciation - they actually officially renamed the city in English. It was also renamed in Hindi at the same time (went from being Bambai).
Still Bombay to me. As I said, the name change was pushed through by Hindu Maharashtrian Fascists in colloboration with the BJP out of religious and nationalist bigotry and a pathetic sense of ‘anti-imperialism’ that seeks to eradicate all traces of any evidence of former British rule. Just as I still call ‘Mynammar’ ‘Burma’ for similar reasons, I will continue to call that city ‘Bombay’. Same with Madras. Screw them...
Dr. Mumbai ?
“I still call it Bombay.”
Me to. Sounds much better.
