DES MOINES -- Nearly half of any future sales tax increase would be earmarked for outdoor and natural resources programs under a measure overwhelmingly approved by the Iowa House on Tuesday.

Although there are no plans to raise Iowa's sales tax, supporters of the proposed constitutional amendment said outdoor programs deserved a share of any future increase. That's because those programs are among the first to be cut in tough budget times, they said.

"When state budgets get cut, almost the first cut is natural resources," said Rep. Paul Bell, D-Newton, the main backer of the measure.

The proposal would dedicate three-eighths of a cent of any future sales tax increase to natural resources programs, generating roughly $150 million. ----------------- Am I the only one who thinks this is nuts. We are passing laws to decide how to spend tax increases not even made yet. Peter Principle in Action Award

Note the author calls this a proposed constitutional amendment. What am I missing here?

So what would happen if they actually reduced the sales tax? (Other than hell freezing over, of course.)

LOL! As someone living in Iowa on the Illinois border we have a saying.

“Sure the governor is a bit daft, but at least we don't live in Illinois!”

What is real funny is this money was originally to come from increased hunting, fishing, and rec fees. Culver vetoed that one, saying that to many people will be turning to the out doors for food soon.

Initially, but somehow the pubs have turned this into the people voting for a constitutional amendment? That part I don't understand although there may be a good reason for it.

This is so FULL of misdirection that after you read it, you know nothing or less than nothing. BUT SOME HOT BUTTONS HAVE BEEN PRESSED. The author, rats and pubs are involved here. Who is misdirecting who?
