Perves Musharraf was playing 'double game' with US
Times UK ^

Washington sent Special Forces into Pakistan last summer after intercepting a call by the Pakistani army chief referring to a notorious Taleban leader as a “strategic asset,” a new book has claimed.

The intercept was ordered to confirm suspicions that the Pakistani military were still actively supporting the Taleban whilst taking millions of dollars in US military aid to fight them, according to the “The Inheritance,” by the New York Times correspondent David Sanger.

In a transcript passed to Mike McConnell, the Director of National Intelligence in May 2008, General Ashfaq Kayani, the military chief who replaced Pervez Musharraf, was overheard referring to Maulavi Jalaluddin Haqqani as “a strategic asset”. The remark was the first real evidence of the double game that Washington had long suspected President Musharraf was playing as he continued receiving US military aid while aiding the Taleban.

Mr Haqqani, a veteran of the anti-Soviet mujahidin wars of the nineties, commands a hardline Taleban group based in Waziristan and is credited with introducing suicide bombing into themilitants’ arsenal.

Washington later intercepted calls from Pakistani military units to Mr Haqqani, warning him of an impending military operation designed to prove to the US that Islamabad was tackling the militant threat.

This is exactly what I and other FReepers have been saying for years now. We were commended by some and ridiculed by a few.

Feels good to be vindicated.

I have been saying it also. They take our money and throw us a bone once in a while. Now they have given the Taliban in Swat sharia law.

The Saudis are making fools of us also.

Haqqani and Gitmo:

Jalaluddin Haqqani’s former terror deputies - Abib Sarajuddin, Khan Zaman, Gul Zaman and Mohammad Gul - will soon be released from Gitmo under 0’s plan.

My guess is he pretty well had to play both sides or he'd have been dead a long time ago.

As to the Saudis playing us for fools, I guess that's what we get for selling them our debt to fight the WOT without cutting back on the welfare state.

What he was effectively doing was taking American money and paying off the Taliban and Al Queda with it (Pakistan, being a failed state, has no economy or money of its own but for what it gets from USA, China, and Saudi Arabia).

The Saudi investment is mostly in form of Wahabbi/Salafi mosques and clerics in the rural heartlands of Pakistan and financing of the Bin Laden network.

What Porkistan effectively produces are islamic terrorist targets. The US and allies get to pay an entry fee(in billions of dollars) for the chance to shoot at these low-lifes. Stop paying them the entry charge first.

Start by threatening to stop supplying them big ticket weapon systems and spares for their aircraft without which they will soon become emasculated against their foe to the east.

And buying tankerloads of their oil every day. If it werent for that, far from funding terror worldwide, them boys wouldnt be doing much other than riding camels, beating women, and eating dates in their version of the stone ages.

indeed, aint it nice to need folks to loan you money on a regular basis? Washington is sold, lock stock and barrel, to various foreign interests, starting with the letter C...

Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is due in Washington in a few days. He and Ahmed Shuja Pasha have some talks to talk, but will they walk the walk?

Only one solution. Been saying it since 98.

Turn the entire middle east (Med to India border) into a 12-inch layer of glass. Then we have an appropriate length of time to work on a peace plan.
