I live in the mountains of southern california and i worked for the forest service for a while, one district had an all natural conservation policy of not cutting down bark beetle infested trees ( it stops the spread of the beetles) no thinning and no wood cutting.
the resulting beetle infestation followed by a few forest fires changed that policy.
