And what idea underpinned the Crusades, the Inquisition, the French Wars of Religion, the 30 Years War, etc., etc., etc.?
I hope they don’t intend to celebrate in the public square...otherwise, I demand equal representation to erect my creationist display.

Do you disagree with the West’s war against Islamic imperialism? I totally disagree with the Inquisition, and as far as I know the Catholic Church has apologized for the same. Have Stalin, Mao, Hitler and Pol Pot apologized for their wars (against humanity itself)? As for the 30 years war:

I believe they are all dead, so it's hard to get them to apologize for anything, any more than it would be possible for the leaders of the Crusades or the 30 Years War to apoligize. But Germany has certainly apologized for Hiter, China has criticized Mao's policies like the Great Leap Forward, and Cambodia has repudiated Pol Pot. But if you want to link Darwin to bloody history then one has to link the church to the same. And that's just Christianity. Don't even start on the Muslims, the Hindus, or the ancient Israelites.
Darwin is the antidote to the biblical concept that all men are created equal.
At the very least, one can celebrate the daring to question and to seek new answers, even if one doesn’t like what he has to say. He was a hero for the scientific method.
So was Newton. So was Pasteur. Let me know when their birthdays receive as much attention as Darwin’s has.
For the most part, the conflicts that you refer to are underpinned by struggles for land, power and wealth…with a veneer of religiosity. ‘The Crusades,’ at least the ones you’re likely referring to were a series of defensive wars fought to combat Islamic imperialism, the French Wars of Religion were a proxy war between England and Spain and their client nobility, and again about power as much as religion, the 30 Years War is a quagmire of competing interests, but comes down to another conflict between ruling dynasties – the Bourbons and the Hapsburgs. The strongest case you make is for the Inquisition, and some of it was genuinely religiously motivated, but as with most of these so-called religious struggles, it is really about power, and in this instance it was the Popes’ and the Roman Catholic Church’s way of maintaining power. In any event, all of these conflicts combined don’t hold a candle to the unmitigated slaughter of literally over a hundred million people wrought by the communist philosophies cited, though I think it’s a dubious claim at best to suggest that Darwin’s natural selection theory is responsible.
Darwin didn’t build crap. If God is an architect, Darwin isn’t even a general laborer picking up trash, if he is even allowed on the work site.
The missed his 200th birthday by one year. His FIRST birthday was the day he was born.
