It’s my recollection that you can claim 11 or so without a look see from the IRS. Check with your tax preparer. Or do 50 and suck it up.

IIRC, there is extra paperwork for more than 10. However, I would like to remind everyone here that there may be penalties if you have a large amount due at the the end of the year as a result of not having enough taxes withheld.

If you are simply a W-2 wage-earner, it is harder to do this.

If you owe more than $1,000 more in taxes at the end of the year (more than what was withheld throughout the year) you will have to complete a worksheet, based on the prior year's taxes, to see if you owe additional penalties on that extra tax due. If you can adjust your withholding correctly, and stay just below that thousand, then there shouldn't be any penalties due.

Uncle Sugar will not be denied his cut of your wages.

It may be easier if you own your own business, but I have no experience with that.

How are they going to prosecute if 10 Million people do this though? Taking a page right out of the Cloward-Pivin hand book, which has been used so successfully against us, if VAST numbers overwhelm the system, the system can not deal with it.

Is the IMF hiring?

The whole idea of civil disobedience is to break laws that they can get you for and to take consequences if you have to. If enough people simply took the option of not withholding any tax at all, they could only get a few of us. If you wish to be legal, figure out the deductions that would cause you to break even at the end of the year, neither owing nor having a refund. The feds actually count on those people having refunds because they get the interest during the year before they refund it to you.

Breaking even at the end of the year, or as close as you can come to it, deprives them of income without running a risk of being jailed or fined.

Everyone should, just because it is good stewardship of your own money, determine what their tax liability is likely to be and setup your deductions accordingly. Allowing the government at any time to take money from you that you do not and will not owe is foolish. Why should you allow them to have control of your money when you do not owe it and will not.
