But most of us chose cars based on emotion and advertising

I initially was in the market for the seatbelt but since I couldn't find one that didn't angle right across my throat, I settled for left elbow room and the kids chose it for the cup holders.

Cup holders are important to us commuters!

I just note that there have always been quite practical ,economical models available ;but it has never been in the interests of commission salesmen to sell such a vehicle. The salesmen, dealers, and manufacturers all benefit short-term by getting the car buyer into the biggest, most expensive vehicle possible. The entire system has a strong bias against practical economics.
