There were plenty of men and even a marriage offer from someone with whom I would have happily settled down. But no, I wasn't prepared to give up my dreams, the life I had been told was the right and proper one for a modern woman.

Reminds me of a story I saw in my armory...

A man asked a woman to marry him. The woman said "No." So the man lived happily ever after. The end.

She could have married him and continued her career. As a writer I'm sure she had plenty of flexibility.
