$490 / month / 14 kids = $1 / day / kid.
That's a bit tough, even on a diet of rice.

WOW just WOW, you don’t know how surprised I am at the news.
So how was she supporting the kids she had? And I am sure she paid the hospital and the breeder for their help.

Six kids (pre-octuplets) and only $490.00 per month? In California? I don’t think so unless she’s getting income from somewhere else also.

That was for 6. She’ll get another $1000+, probably.

She probably gets
WIC too.

$490...she gets more than that. After my son-in-law was laid off his third job in six months I convinced them to get food stamps. (yea I know but just until his next job) Anyway there are five of the and they get $700. Their food budget when he is working is $250. My daughter told them it was to much and she was told she needed to spend the whole amount every month or they would stop getting the stamps.
They were on them only one month, SIL got another job.

So how did she afford the thousands of dollars required for the artificial insemination?

$490 just on product, I think I could feed 15 for a month without a problem. Probably have to supplement with local game and garden.
I get by on about $30/month for purchased food. I do eat a lot of game and garden produce.
Years of experience feeding lots of troops helps.
You can't feed 'em Doritos(tm).

Stories like this are what these programs are for. Temporary help for people down on their luck.
They are not substitutes for going out and getting a job.
I know I am foolin myself but its the only way I keep sane.

She should be arrested for welfare fraud. If she has enough money for IVF, she does not need food stamps.

My daughter told them it was to much and she was told she needed to spend the whole amount every month or they would stop getting the stamps. I believe they can no longer say that. Unused benefits stay on the account indefinitely, as long as it is active. Many people don't need/use all of it.

It’s not 14 kids. It’s SIX. She’s getting $490 for SIX kids. She gets nothing yet for the other 8.
That’s $81 per kid, per month. That’s $2.72 a day per kid. That’s not great, but it’s only supposed to be a supplement. $16.32 a day is not a bad supplement for a family.

Temporary is the optimum word. And it was for them. My surprise was how much they got.

You need to read up on the 2008 Farm Act. Assets are no longer considered up to a point (pretty high for a family of 8 or 16 or whatever).

I’m glad your SIL found work. A man (and his MIL!) always feels better when he can support his family by his own efforts!

I’ll let them know if for some reason they have to back on the stamps. What they did was stock up on canned and packaged goods.
