Two in Dickinson County Test Positive for Swine Flu
April 25, 2009 07:28 PM MDT
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirms two cases of swine flu in Kansas.
The two people are a husband and wife from Dickinson County. The KDHE says one of the patients recently traveled to Mexico, flying in and out of Wichita. Both people work in Saline County. Neither of the patients was hospitalized - one is still ill and being treated. The other is recovering.
The couple has the same strain of swine flu that’s killed dozens in Mexico and sickened thousands in that country, California and Texas. The head of the World Health Organization says the outbreak has “pandemic potential,” and it may be too late to contain the outbreak.

U.S. slow to learn of Mexico flu
Saturday, April 25, 2009/ The Washington Post - excerpt
Washington — “U.S. public health officials did not know about a growing outbreak of swine flu in Mexico until nearly a week after that country had started invoking protective measures and didn’t learn that the deaths were caused by a rare strain of the influenza until after Canadian officials did.
The delayed communication occurred as epidemiologists in Southern California were investigating milder cases of the illness that turned out to be caused by the same strain of swine flu in Mexico.”

unintentionally!
This is not good. Break out in a 3d world country on our back door and an aggressive highly transmissive bug.
Oink Oink! Just dropping in to say hello from MN! How is everyone?
Not much to report minus missing Somalians, possible swine flu, and a huge Cinco de Mayo celebration happening here this Friday...
Thanks Lucy. I was sure that I would continue to avoid vaccines and now I am positive. If P-73 cannot fix the problem, then, adios.
Just FYI - on another thread a FReeper is stating that the press is now minimizing the threat that the Mr. Solis posed to Obama. They are saying he died of a “heart attack”, and that complications due to pre-existing medical conditions probably contributed (he was a diabetic).
I brought this up on that other thread, but without the input of a coroner or doctor (or even a genealogist familiar with death certificates) I’m at a loss. I’m hoping that some on this thread may be able to give a little more insight...
If this man contracted this flu, and was unable to fight it off due to his pre-existing medical conditions (diabetes, possibly heart disease), and the actual, FINAL cause of death was an “acute myocardial infarction” (SP?) would the “cause of death” also include the diabetic related syndrome he apparently suffered, as WELL as his presenting symptoms of flu. Or would the official cause of death be simply “heart attack”.
I think everyone can see where I’m going with this. (At the risk of sounding paranoid, when in actuality I’m just trying to gain more information so that I DON’T get paranoid! LOL) Would it not be pretty easy for our government and healthcare “overseers” (like WHO & the CDC) to UNDER-report the amount of people dying from this flu by incorrectly classifying these deaths by listing the final “event” (respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, acute dehydration, etc...), and not reporting the presence of the flu symptoms? OR, would this line of thinking be disrespectful of the good people at the CDC and WHO who truly do dedicate their lives towards trying to PREVENT things like this?
A 26-year-old man has been hospitalized in Netanya, Israel and is suspected of contracting swine flu after returning from Mexico.
Going global pretty fast. Not surprising. I read on another thread that the New York students had just returned from Cancun. Have there been any reported cases in Cancun?

I finally found a link to Baxter making the vaccine. This article has the most up to date news from this morning as well. Check link

Vaccine makers are taking the initial steps toward making shots against swine flu. Baxter International Inc., a maker of both seasonal and pandemic vaccines, has requested samples of the swine virus for laboratory testing, said Christopher Bona, a spokesman for Deerfield, Illinois-based Baxter. GlaxoSmithKline Plc, based in London, has had conversations with WHOs flu division thats responsible for distributing flu virus samples to drugmakers, said Deborah Alspach, a spokeswoman.
Other companies that make flu vaccine include Novartis AG, of Basel, Switzerland, and Sanofi-Aventis SA, of Paris.
Roches Tamiflu
Roche Holding AG, of Basel, has an ample supply of Tamiflu, which can reduce the symptoms of swine flu. Roche has donated a Rapid Response Stockpile of 5 million treatment courses to the WHO thats on 24-hour stand-by to be sent around the world, said Terence Hurley, a spokesman for the company. No request has been made to deploy the stockpile, he said in an email.
Glaxo also has ample supplies of its inhaled Relenza antiviral, which also appears to be effective against the swine flu in CDC tests, Alspach said.
