Strike back at tax cheat Tim Geithner

Are you up for a cathartic act of civil disobedience? DaveG at Where’s the Change? has a subversive plan. I like it:

"I think it’s time for a comeback for civil disobedience. The only thing that angers me more than the rampant elitism and corruption in our government is that apparent tolerance for it that was demonstrated most recently with the appointment of what is almost certainly a tax cheat as the Treasury Secretary. Surely I am not alone in wondering why I am a big enough sap to pay tens of thousands of dollars in Federal taxes each and every year, while our Washington bureaucrats seem to get away consequence free with a pattern of cheating and fraud. And please, don’t tell me Tom Daschle didn’t get away with it. Sure, he lost his position for a cabinet position, but don’t you think he will be laughing all the way back to his millions-a-year “consulting” gig? Will he be prosecuted for his fraud like I would be? Did he pay any penalties? No, and no. Since my single, solitary vote is nothing more that a BB in a machine gun world, I intend to start practicing civil disobedience. In the case of Treasury Secretary Geithner, I am going to have a rubber stamp made that says “Tax Cheat!” in block letters. Every time I see a piece of paper currency with Geithner’s signature on it, I am going to stamp over his name with my Tax Cheat stamp. Sure, this action is just as futile as my vote, but eventually maybe others will reach the same conclusion that I have: it is far past time to make our voices heard.'

Dave has a link to an inexpensive stampmaker at his blog, or you can go to taxcheatstamps.com — until, that is, Dear Leader and Dear Treasury Tax Cheater move to shut them down. Remember: Dissent is no longer patriotic.

Was it legal to throw tea in Boston Harbor?

Many people might refuse to accept the bill with the stamped red letters.

Change machines are your friend.

The guy who owns the change machine is going to deposit the bills for sure. Then it will be up to the bank whether to recirculate them. I invite Mr. Geithner to issue appropriate regulations to ensure bank compliance. After all, what's a government for?

Maybe it would be better if NOBODY paid their taxes this year.

Isn't it illegal to deface U.S. currency?

Is it a more serious offense for a tax dodger to be given authority over a whole country of taxpayers?

As to defacing U.S. currency, who sends dollar bills to the IRS? Apparently I'm missing something here.

Taxpayers send checks, I think. So what reason is there to deface U.S. currency?

Help me out here, please.

Apparently we don't all have the gumption of many of those in our past history. A poster here mentioned the Boston Tea Party, e.g.

How do we get even 1% of taxpayers to withhold their payments?

The government(s) know we're not organized and they feel free to tread all over us.

I was a nickel short on my quarterlies and they gave me a bill for $398 in penalties and interest. I note that neither Geithner nor Daschle paid penalties. Just what they owed and interest. I on the other hand get stuck with penalties!!!!! Two Americas indeed.

In fact, isn't it illegal to deface U.S. currency?

I'm not sure. I see clerks put purple marks on bills from time to time. And I would think you could legally burn your own dollar bills.

It's a good question.
