McAuliffe, How to Deploy Clinton: Ties Can Be Asset, Liability in Virginia
Washington Post ^ | February 7, 2009; | Tim Craig

RICHMOND -- As one of Bill Clinton's closest friends, Terry McAuliffe was there to console the president on the Truman Balcony of the White House in 1994 when voters delivered a humiliating rejection of the Clinton presidency by turning over control of Congress to the GOP.

McAuliffe was there to tell Bill and Hillary Clinton that they didn't need to worry about mounting legal expenses in 1998. "We'll take care of it," McAuliffe told the president one weekend at Camp David. And when Clinton couldn't get a loan to buy a house in New York state so Hillary could run for the U.S. Senate in 2000, McAuliffe told them: "I've got the money."

Now it is McAuliffe, a Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, who will need help raising money and drawing crowds. And it just so happens, that's exactly the kind of help his friend Bill is particularly suited to provide.

"In the nomination process, I think Bill Clinton is a nuclear weapon for McAuliffe, " said Dave "Mudcat" Saunders, a Roanoke-based political strategist.

Former president Bill Clinton, left, could help Terry McAuliffe raise money and attract black and
working-class white voters. But he can veer off message
and might hurt McAuliffe's efforts to show
he is in touch with Virginia's concerns.

I wonder why he is spending his money that way instead of targeted mailings. He must think he’s going to win the primary and is looking to get his name out there to the general public.

I can't even remember if Hillary or Obama won the Democratic primary in Virginia. If Hillary lost, it was probably partially because of Bill.

I think you’re right.

I don’t know about the Hampton Roads area (where they’re area) but here on the Eastern Shore, where we primarily rely on the HR stations for our “local” news, folks are already sick of the ads, and this is only February and I’m talking about Dems saying they’re sick of him.

Did you have a chance to look at Bob McDonnell’s website? I really like him.

I’ve seen the site, but I’ve like Bob since he ran for AG :)

He’s done a decent job with the website, I like, but as I said, I like him and have for some time!

Perhaps some anti-Clinton sentiment in those numbers. Could hurt McAuliffe and help McDonnell.

I haven't heard much about him in his role as AG. I suppose the media is ignoring him and his efforts as AG in order to try to help the democrat.
