RICHMOND -- As one of Bill Clinton's closest friends, Terry McAuliffe was there to console the president on the Truman Balcony of the White House in 1994 when voters delivered a humiliating rejection of the Clinton presidency by turning over control of Congress to the GOP.
McAuliffe was there to tell Bill and Hillary Clinton that they didn't need to worry about mounting legal expenses in 1998. "We'll take care of it," McAuliffe told the president one weekend at Camp David. And when Clinton couldn't get a loan to buy a house in New York state so Hillary could run for the U.S. Senate in 2000, McAuliffe told them: "I've got the money."
Now it is McAuliffe, a Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, who will need help raising money and drawing crowds. And it just so happens, that's exactly the kind of help his friend Bill is particularly suited to provide.
"In the nomination process, I think Bill Clinton is a nuclear weapon for McAuliffe, " said Dave "Mudcat" Saunders, a Roanoke-based political strategist.
Former president Bill Clinton, left, could help Terry McAuliffe raise money and attract black and
working-class white voters. But he can veer off message
and might hurt McAuliffe's efforts to show
he is in touch with Virginia's concerns.

Bob McDonnell has nice website. I wish him well.
Virginia ping list. Hard to believe there’s an election again already. No rest for the weary or down-hearted!
I saw my first McAwful commercial today. God help us if he wins.
Really? Already! I wonder who’s running in the Democrat primary. I think Jim Moran’s cousin is one.
Aren’t you surprised the WP used that photo? I am!
I am worried about this election. Terry McAuliffe is a very good organizer. Didn’t he mastermind the 2006 and 2008 elections? I hope I am wrong, but he could win this thing. I will take a look at Bob McDonnel’s website. I never heard of him before.
Bob McDonnell is a good candidate and has won statewide. Agreed about McAuliffe, but he’s never won anything himself.
I am so thankful that you posted to me and mentioned that Bob McDonnell has won statewide election. That is very important. He has a pretty good shot then...or at least better than I thought. He is really going to have to be aggressive and get out to every area of Virginia...again helpful that he has probably done this already. He should start reminding people of his ties with the Clinton's...that might help some.
Here’s a little good news early on

Thank you. That is great news. We might just kick some butt in 2010 and then retake the White House in 2012. It is true that everything in politics is cyclical and we might already start seeing our side looking good.
I think McDonnel’s DREAM should be for The Clintoon to campaign for McAuliffe!
I hope Virginians will pick up the pace and win this one. There should be some Obama backlash to work in our favor. People are being reminded what leftism looks like and it’s frightening.
I think McAuliffe reminds people, even Democrats, what they DON'T like about the Clintons.
Creigh Deeds is running. Moran is running as well.
Yes, I couldn’t believe it when I saw that commercial today. I have seen on other threads that McAwful has been running commercials in other parts of the state.
Deeds is a member of the House of Delegates?
On a more important note, the Hokies are now leading in OT, 87-84 after trailing the entire game!
But he can veer off message and might hurt McAuliffe's efforts to show he is in touch with Virginia's concerns.
I surely hope.
Today was the first time you saw one of his TV ads? Lucky lady you. They are all over the Hampton Roads stations, and those are the only channels I get.
OOPS -— my post #19 was meant for you as well.
If the weather is right, I can get the Salisbury, MD stations, but as a rule I only get the ones from VABeach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, etc in Hampton Roads. I know I’m exaggerating, but it sure as heck seems that as soon as the November elections ended he started his ads. They are practically incessant.
