I'm not trying to stand up for Obama's trip in any way, but GWB used AF One for his last official use when he went to Norfolk to commission CVN 77. I believe Obama went into Langley, and Bush went into NAS Norfolk, about 15 miles apart. Also, there was a former president onboard as well, in addition to quite a few other members of the Bush family. It WAS their last use of AF One officially, I think it was somewhat of a sentimental flight for all of them; the return flight to Texas was not, officially, AF One. Obama's use for the 131 mile flight, IMO, was pure bling.
Did you see the program on tv..I forgot which station carried the documentary on AF One but when the outgoing President flies home his pilot flys the jet and the incoming Presidential pilot is co pilot and on the return to DC the roles are reversed.
When Nixon was President and he flew into El Toro on the way to San Clemente, his jet was parked at El Toro. I used to screen Marines for Presidential support. One day the Top Sgt asked if I would like a tour of AF ONE. It was amazing!
Just imagine what it is like now!
