CHULA VISTA A South Bay teacher was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of more than 80 counts of sexual abuse stemming from a four-year relationship with her former student and godson that began when the boy was 11, police said.
Carmina Erica Lopez, 32, a fifth-grade teacher at Sunnyslope Elementary School in Palm City, was taken into custody about 7:30 p.m. in front of her Mission Hills home, Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Linney said. Investigators believe that Lopez met and began having sex with the boy, who is now 15, when she was his sixth-grade teacher in 2004 at Nestor Elementary School, said Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzales. The family was so impressed with Lopez that they asked her to be the boy's godmother, Gonzales said.
The allegations came to light when the boy disclosed to the county's Child Welfare Services that Lopez had forced him to have sex with her, Gonzales said. Chula Vista detectives investigated and found information leading to her arrest. Lopez used to live in Chula Vista. Police believe the relationship with the boy ended last June.
South Bay Union School District Superintendent Carol Parish called the charges Lopez is facing very serious and said the district is fully cooperating with the police. Ms. Lopez will be on mandatory leave pending the processing of these charges, she said. In the meantime we will continue our focus on teaching and learning.
Lopez was questioned by detectives until early Thursday, when she was booked into Las Colinas jail on 83 counts, which include continuous sexual abuse of a child, aggravated sexual assault of a child, sexual battery of a child, sexual intercourse with a minor, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under age 14, child cruelty and failing to report child abuse. According to Gonzales, Lopez is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon. Staff writer Chris Moran contributed to this report.
Jeez. Here we go again.
Somewhat guilty, but after a few beers, not guilty.

When women do commit this crime it is called sexual abuse. When men commit such crimes, it is called rape. Why the difference?
actual penetration.
Please forget the do
After reading the article penetration happened!
GUILTY
I say just not guilty.
Normally, I’d vote not guilty, but an 11 year old victim is too far over the edge.
I’m calling BS on this one. A 16 year old maybe, but an 11 year old? Not a freaking chance.
Perhaps I was a late bloomer, but at 11, an erection was not forthcoming
She wouldn’t be guilty if the boy was AT LEAST 15! But 11?! Guilty! She’s a mental case. Definite issues.
Naughty teacher ping. If I were 11 not guilty,now that I’m 11+30,guilty!!
10 cent bullet
Oh boy, another thread with skanky replies that makes FR look like the Clinton White House.
I have to agree with your verdict.
Looks along would rate a NOT GUILTY from me but given that she chose an 11-year old kid changes my verdict to GUILTY.
