MERCED COUNTY, Calif. -- A Hilmar resident sicked her 70-pound pit bull on her nephew after a Super Bowl party, sending the 13-year-old boy to a local hospital, the Merced County Sheriff's Department said.
Melissa Marcrum, 35, is being held on a $50,000 bail at the Merced County Jail, Deputy Tom MacKenzie said.
The dog named "Kane" apparently ran after the boy and chased him out a window after Marcrum gave a "sic 'em," command, MacKenzie said. The boy and his friend finally ran out of the house in the 7000 block of Lander Avenue and got into a car to get away from the pit bull.
Marcrum said she thought the dog wouldn't hurt the children, so she opened the car door, according to sheriff's deputies.
The dog bit Marcrum's nephew on his upper left arm, tearing his skin and muscle, MacKenzie said. Family members were able to intervene and pull the dog off the boy.
Witnesses said Marcrum was intoxicated at the time.
Kane has since been taken to animal control. Witnesses told officials that the dog is usually friendly.
The boy remains hospitalized at Emmanuel Medical Center in Turlock, deputies said. He is in stable condition.
MacKenzie said the hospital forwarded a report of a dog bite to Child Protective Services.
Marcrum faces charges of felony child endangerment, MacKenzie said.
The Aunt
wow. one of those “she’s as dumb as she looks” people. amazing. i can only shake my head.
The should put her out of her misery.
She’s got the face of pit bull owner.
Keep the dog, and have the vet put the aunt down.
She’s got the face of a pit bull.
Was she a Arizona Cardinal fan and the kid a Steeler fan?
Wow, she’s so ugly I’d rather take my chances with the dog.
Witnesses said Marcrum was intoxicated at the time.
which one is that a picture of? Pit bull or aunt?
A 70 pound bulldog! I mean, come on, that is ridiculous. I got my first bulldog when I was sixteen, and always had dogs less than forty-five pounds. There is no need for such a huge catch-weight dog, except that people think they are scarier. And that is just what is killing such a great breed. Macho image driven breeding, which leads to huge and mean animals with none of the awesome qualities that made such great pets for so long.
Yep, at 70 lbs it’s not a Pit Bull. May have Pit mixed in, but not just a Pit.
I’m waiting for all the Statists to jump in and yell about banning “vicious” pit bulls. It’s definitely the dog, not the person who turns it into a monster...
As far as size goes, my parents have a 90 lb. yellow lab (not an ounce of fat either; we work him so he’s all muscle). He’s a big dumb hairball, and my mom calls him a horse, but I’d love to have another 50-60 lbs. on him.
I hope some day to have a mastiff or bull mastiff...something 150-200 lbs. Big enough to knock me down when I come home if I’m not ready for him. You can bet a dog that big would be the best trained horse you’d ever meet.
Apparently she never got the Dean Wormer lecture.
Look into Caucasian Ovcharkas. Better temperament usually than a mastiff. Although I agree it more the owner than the breed.
GUILTY.
Yikes. I wouldn't even hit that with a car.
This was shortly after "hold muh beer".
Hi Back in the 80’s we had a dog (mutt) weight about 40 pounds. Never bite a single person...My husband was going out phesant hunting with his buddy and they went to his buddy’s house to pick up his dog. The dog had already bit the post man once. My husband was leaning against the car went his buddy opened the back yard gate to let the dog out. The dog ran to the car but as he passed my husband he went for his knee and tore his Levi’s. Didn’t draw blood but my husband said he felt the teeth. Fast forward a week and his buddy was at our house and started razing my husband about the near bite he almost got. His buddy was petting our dog and chuckling. I walked into the family room and in my normal voice said “Get um Mugs”. The dog was up on his chest in a flash showing teeth. I called him off and buddy boy was pi$$ed. He said “Why the hell did you do that? I mearly answered “Its not so funny when your on the other end of a dog bite is it? I then just walked back into the kitchen with my dog...Our friend never mentioned his dog again...sometimes people need a reminder about what is and is not funny...My dog did not bite him, just scared him a little
