It was rumored that the U.S. made a concession to the Soviets in Eastern Europe in exchange for their help in pinpointing Che in Bolivia. Castro assisted because if Guevara eventually returned to Cuba he would become a political rival. This was alleged in a documentary.

A retired USAF NCO told me in 2001 that he was in the crew of a plane that flew to La Paz, picked up Che's severed hands and flew them back to the U.S. so his death could be established. He said the hands were packed in a container with dry ice.
