Barely two weeks in office, President Barack Hussein Obama will raise taxes this afternoon with his signature on the SCHIP bill scheduled to pass the House of Representatives today.
The reauthorization of the State Children's Health Insurance Program includes massive tax increases on cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products. Similar bills were vetoed twice by President George W. Bush in part because of the tax increases. Democrats in the House and Senate have voted overwhelmingly for the tax increases each time the bill was proposed and were joined by a handful of Republicans.
The bill Obama will sign today raises the federal tax on a pack of cigarettes by 62 cents (or $6.20 per carton) bringing the federal tax to $1.01 per pack.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was quoted by the AP as saying of the bill signing, ""It's going to be a happy day for America."
A Heritage Foundation analysis of the bill reported that even with the massive tax increases, 22 million new smokers will be needed to pay for the expansion of SCHIP.
Obama is scheduled to hold a public signing ceremony at 4:30 P.M. today.
Yep. Facts are pesky things, aren’t they. I was talking to a neighbor (nice guy, retired truck driver, ex-Marine) and remarked that Oba Mao would be like a second term for Jimmy Carter. He snorted and said “We’ll be lucky if that is as bad as it gets. He’ll be more like Jimmy Carter on steriods or worse.”
Thank heavens only the rich smoke, thus this won’t be a tax increase on the poor and the middle class!
I smell carbon monoxide every time I start my car.....and yet I am posting to you.
They already do. They can use their ebt cards to buy them.
It's always safe to support a cause that can't be measured.
Tobacco products are unhealthy. My point was that tobacco taxes aren’t going to pay for SCHIP.
Taxing the poor, no less.....
Why don't they tax homosexuality or alcohol is they really cared about peoples' health. http://www.forces.org/evidence/evid/therap.htm
It will be interesting if the nitwit-in-chief pays taxes on his cigarettes. Wanna bet that he will be given his smokes by his lobbyist friends, and of course dems don’t pay taxes on “gifts”. He sure doesn’t pay taxes on the other stuff he’s smoking.

This is it. With the advent of totalitarianism always comes a huge Black Market.
Regarding your supporting taxing smokers:
Consider this, attributed to a Pastor Martin Niemoeller, an early supporter for Hitler who eventually ended up in the camps:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
3,000 s.f. home with 2 rooftop decks
Remodeled kitchen with glass front cabinets and custom concrete countertops
4 kids in private school at at least $500 per child copay even with a scholarship (friend of 10 years claims wealthy grandparents pay the $20,000 per child tuition)
3 SUVs including a new work truck
Owns his own business
Owns commercial property under a LLC
Has a rent paying tennant in his commercial property
THIS IS THE FAMILY THAT GETS SCHIP BEFORE ITS EXPANDED TO MORE WEALTHY FAMILIES......
‘I SUPPORT increasing the taxes on ___’, is just another stupid citizen’s wrong headed march to serfdom...both the Rs & Ds just can’t wait to force the rest of us to bow down to the all knowing state.
I predict a substantial uptick in income for local Indian tribe markets
The Indians are having a Pow Wow today. Time to celebrate for them.
Yes he will!
Isn't that "Change we can Believe in?"
How long before they start taxing ammo to supplement the tobacco tax for SHCIT? For the children, of course.
Think about it a second. Taxes on stamps and tea was once considered a just cause for armed revolt in this country. Now it's considered a just payback for behavior the government doesn't like.
